The photocatalytic degradation of phenol under solar irradiation using microwave-assisted Ag-doped ZnO nanostructures

Sulaiman S. A. Al Ghafry et al.

Summary: The contamination of water resources is a major environmental concern, especially the presence of hazardous pollutants such as phenol. Therefore, developing cost-effective techniques to remove phenol from water is crucial. This study investigated the use of silver-doped zinc oxide nanorods (Ag-ZnO NRs) for the degradation of phenol under sunlight. The synthesized Ag-ZnO NRs exhibited two distinct structures, hexagonal and cubic, and their optical properties showed significant improvement due to silver doping. The 0.5% Ag-doped ZnO NRs showed the highest photocatalytic activity, achieving a degradation rate of 98.5% for phenol removal under solar light irradiation after 5 hours.

Copper tungstate (CuWO4)/graphene quantum dots (GQDs) composite photocatalyst for enhanced degradation of phenol under visible light irradiation

Asma Sarwar et al.

Summary: Photocatalysis is an effective method for degrading organic pollutants using sunlight. This study developed a composite photocatalyst consisting of CuWO4 and graphene quantum dots (GQDs) to achieve better visible light activity. Different amounts of CuWO4 were used to prepare a series of photocatalysts, and their activity for phenol degradation was evaluated. The optimized sample, 0.5GCW, showed the highest efficiency of 53.41%, compared to the pure CuWO4 sample with 19.08% efficiency. Enhanced activity of CuWO4 is attributed to efficient electron transfer to GQDs. The results indicate that GQDs significantly contribute to the improvement of photocatalytic performance with CuWO4.

Fabrication of hierarchical hollow BiOBr@ZnIn2S4 heterojunction to enhance the visible-light-driven photodegradation of dyes

Mei Cai et al.

Summary: The photodegradation of pollutants is a significant and environmentally friendly technology. The fabrication of hierarchical heterojunction is an efficient method to enhance photocatalytic performance. In this study, a hierarchical type-II BiOBr@ZnIn2S4 heterojunction was successfully fabricated using a simple chemistry method. The optimal sample BS170 exhibited higher photodegradation efficiency under visible light, being 2.3 times higher than pure BiOBr for MO degradation, while having only half the mass of BiOBr and achieving the same photocatalytic effect for RhB degradation. These results indicate that the fabrication of heterojunctions can enhance visible light absorption capacity and separation efficiency of photoinduced electron-hole pairs, thus increasing photodegradation efficiency. Therefore, this work provides a novel strategy for fabricating hierarchical type-II heterojunction photocatalysts for dye degradation.

One step grinding method to prepare BiFeO3/α-Fe2O3 type-II heterojunction for enhancing phenolic wastewater degradation

Chang Xu et al.

Summary: A series of novel and stable BiFeO3/alpha-Fe2O3 type-II heterojunction photocatalysts with different weight contents of alpha-Fe2O3 were prepared using a one-step grinding method. Various analytical techniques were used to study the structure, surface state, optical properties, and interfacial interactions of the catalysts. The results showed that the one-step grinding method successfully formed type-II heterojunction between BiFeO3 and alpha-Fe2O3, leading to enhanced electron transformation, separation of electron-hole pairs, and visible-light absorption. The BiFeO3/alpha-Fe2O3-30% composite exhibited the highest activity, with 85.87% phenol degradation under simulated solar irradiation after 2 hours, significantly outperforming single alpha-Fe2O3 and single BiFeO3. Additionally, the BiFeO3/alpha-Fe2O3-30% heterojunction composite maintained excellent catalytic performance after 3 cycles.
