Biodegradation of anthelmintics in soils: does prior exposure of soils to anthelmintics accelerate their dissipation?

Stahis Lagos et al.

Summary: This study found that soil microorganisms play a key role in the dissipation of anthelmintics, and the total organic carbon in the soil also affects the dissipation of anthelmintics.

Following the route of veterinary antibiotics tiamulin and tilmicosin from livestock farms to agricultural soils

C. Perruchon et al.

Summary: Veterinary antibiotics are not metabolized completely in animals and can be dispersed into the environment when animal excretes are used as soil manures. This study investigated the persistence of tiamulin and tilmicosin from pig administration to fecal excretion and agricultural soils. The results showed that tilmicosin had higher levels of residues in feces compared to tiamulin, and different administration and storage conditions affected the persistence of these antibiotics in feces and soils.

Contents of photosynthetic pigments and ratios of chlorophyll a/b and chlorophylls to carotenoids (a plus b)/(x+c) in C4 plants as compared to C3 plants

H. K. Lichtenthaler et al.

Summary: C4 plants have higher Chl a/b ratios compared to C3 plants, with sugar maize having the highest ratio. During autumnal senescence, C4 plants show a faster decline in chlorophyll content, resulting in higher Chl a/b ratios.

Leaching of benzimidazole antiparasitics in soil columns and in soil columns amended with sheep excreta

Rafael Silveira Porto et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the leaching behavior of benzimidazole drugs and their metabolites in soils of different textures and sheep excreta-amended soils. The results showed that benzimidazoles were considered slightly to moderately mobile in the tested soils, posing a potential risk to soil biota and the development of resistant strains of parasites.

Environmental risk assessment of the anthelmintic albendazole in Eastern Africa, based on a systematic review

Sileshi Belew et al.

Summary: This study conducted an environmental risk assessment of the anthelmintic medicine albendazole in the eastern African region, revealing potential environmental risks of albendazole in surface water and soil in that region, calling for actions to mitigate these risks.

Insights into the efficient elimination of veterinary drug from water by adsorption on activated carbon: optimization study

C. Zekkaoui et al.

Summary: The study investigated the optimal conditions for adsorption of albendazole on activated carbon derived from a plant waste, resulting in a maximum elimination yield of 99.97% and adsorption capacity of 137.2 mg g(-1). The adsorption process followed pseudo-second order kinetics and various isotherm models fitted the experimental data well, with thermodynamically favorable adsorption on the activated carbon. Boyd's model suggested that intraparticle diffusion was not the rate limiting step, indicating multiple mechanisms may be involved in the adsorption process.

Proof of the environmental circulation of veterinary drug albendazole in real farm conditions*

Martina Navratilova et al.

Summary: This study monitored the circulation of anthelmintic drug Albendazole (ABZ) and its metabolites in real agricultural conditions, showing that ABZ metabolites from sheep excrement can permeate into plants used as fodder and subsequently enter other sheep, potentially leading to drug resistance in helminths.

Bioaugmentation of animal feces as a mean to mitigate environmental contamination with anthelmintic benzimidazoles

S. Lagos et al.

Summary: Anthelmintics are commonly used to control gastrointestinal nematode infestations in ruminants, but their limited metabolism in animals leads to excretion in feces, posing a potential environmental contamination risk. A thiabendazole-degrading bacterial consortium was found to effectively degrade benzimidazole anthelmintics, particularly compounds with smaller substituents. Bioaugmentation with this consortium enhanced the degradation of anthelmintics in sheep feces, especially when the feces were fumigated to eliminate the indigenous microbial community. Overall, bioaugmentation shows promise as an efficient method to reduce environmental exposure to persistent anthelmintic benzimidazoles.

An analysis of the spatio-temporal occurrence of anthelmintic veterinary drug residues in groundwater

D. Mooney et al.

Summary: A comprehensive study in the Republic of Ireland investigated the occurrence of 40 anthelmintic residues in groundwaters, revealing 17 compounds detected at 22% of sites, with albendazole and its transformation products being most frequently found. Multivariate statistical analysis identified significant source and pathway factors related to the occurrence of anthelmintics in groundwater, and temporal variations showed higher frequencies and concentrations during specific months coinciding with increased usage and meteorological events. This study provides valuable insights into the presence of anthelmintics in Irish groundwater and seasonal trends critical for assessing potential impacts of climate change.

Albendazole and Mebendazole as Anti-Parasitic and Anti-Cancer Agents: an Update

Jong-Yil Chai et al.

Summary: Albendazole and mebendazole, benzimidazole broad-spectrum anthelmintics, have been found effective in treating parasitic infections and cancers, but prolonged use may lead to liver toxicity and other side effects. Furthermore, these drugs have been repositioned as promising anti-cancer drugs with demonstrated activity against various types of cancers.
