Cattle manure management using microbial fuel cells for green energy generation

Zainab Syed et al.

Summary: The use of bio-electrochemical systems to treat animal waste has shown potential in reducing environmental impact of estrogen from modern livestock farming. Laboratory-scale microbial fuel cells (MFCs) using ultrasonicated cattle manures generated maximum power density, with buffalo dung showing higher efficiency in chemical oxygen demand and biochemical oxygen demand removal. The use of PBD as substrate in MFCs resulted in higher coulombic efficiency, voltage, and power density, with electrically stacking multiple MFC units showing significantly increased power output.

Ammonia-induced inhibition of manure-based continuous biomethanation process under different organic loading rates and associated microbial community dynamics

M. L. Christou et al.

Summary: In this study, the operation of three CTSRs under different OLR conditions revealed that increasing the OLR to raise the C/N ratio can intensify the inhibition of anaerobic processes, especially under high ammonia concentration. Different responses of bacterial and archaeal communities were observed under ammonia stress conditions. Additionally, the dominant methanogenesis route varied depending on the OLR and ammonia concentration.

Enhanced bisphenol S anaerobic degradation using an NZVI-HA-modified anode in bioelectrochemical systems

Chenyi Shi et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that using an NZVI-HA composite-modified bio-anode could significantly enhance the anaerobic degradation efficiency of BPS in a Bioelectrochemical Systems (BES). The findings indicated that HA accelerated the reduction rate of Fe3+ and promoted electron transfer, leading to a change in the BPS degradation pathway. Analysis of microbial diversity suggested that bacteria such as Terrimonas, Lysobacter, and Acidovorax may be involved in BPS degradation.

Electrochemical Ammonia Recovery from Anaerobic Centrate Using a Nickel-Functionalized Activated Carbon Membrane Electrode

Kyoung-Yeol Kim et al.

Summary: This study investigated an activated carbon (AC)-based membrane electrode functionalized with nickel for electrochemical recovery of NH3 from synthetic anaerobic centrate. As the recovery solution became more acidic, NH3-N fluxes and energy consumptions improved. Increasing PVDF loadings did not impact the electrochemical performances of the Ni/AC-PVDF electrode.

Microbial Communities Involved in Methane, Sulfur, and Nitrogen Cycling in the Sediments of the Barents Sea

Shahjahon Begmatov et al.

Summary: A combination of physicochemical and radiotracer analysis, high-throughput sequencing of the 16S rRNA, and genes related to methane oxidation was used to link microbial community profiles with methane, sulfur, and nitrogen cycling processes in surface sediments in the northern part of the Barents Sea. The study found that different microbial communities in the sediments play distinct roles in the cycling of methane, sulfur, and nitrogen elements.
