Insight into the Enhanced Removal of Water from Coal Slime via Solar Drying Technology: Dewatering Performance, Solar Thermal Efficiency, and Economic Analysis

Xin Guo et al.

Summary: In this study, solar drying technology was used for the deep dewatering of coal slime, resulting in energy savings and reduced dust production. The influence of solar radiation intensity and slime thickness on the drying process was investigated, and it was found that higher radiation intensity and thinner slime led to faster drying efficiency. By analyzing energy utilization under different conditions, optimal drying conditions were determined, and it was found that a target moisture content of 10% and a laying thickness of 1 cm achieved the highest energy utilization and solar thermal efficiency. Economic calculations and analysis showed that solar drying was more cost-effective than hot air drying, making it a promising method for coal slime drying.

Effects of CaO-Fe2O3-Fe3(PO4)2 in sewage sludge on combustion characteristics and kinetics of coal slime

Yanlin Wang et al.

Summary: The co-combustion of sewage sludge and coal slime is a promising method for the harmless disposal of these two solid wastes. The minerals in sewage sludge have significant effects on the combustion of coal slime during co-combustion. Both single and composite minerals have influences on the combustion of coal slime, and the composite minerals can synergistically catalyze the combustion. The kinetic results show that the minerals decrease the apparent activation energy of coal slime during fixed carbon combustion.

A comparison of oxidation and re-flocculation behaviors of Fe2+/PAA and Fe2+/H2O2 treatments for enhancing sludge dewatering: A mechanism study

Xiao Ling et al.

Summary: In this study, Fe2+ activated-PAA was developed to enhance sludge dewatering. The results showed that Fe2+/PAA treatment was more effective than Fe2+/H2O2 treatment under neutral and alkaline conditions, but weaker under acid conditions. Fe2+/PAA treatment caused more disintegration of sludge flocs, resulting in weaker aggregation behaviors and hampered removal of bound water. Additionally, loosely-bound and tightly-bound extracellular polymeric substances played a significant role in sludge dewaterability.

The variation of odor characteristics of wastewater sludge treated by advanced anaerobic digestion (AAD) and the contribution pattern of key odorants

Wei Gao et al.

Summary: Identification of the odor characteristics of wastewater sludge is crucial in evaluating sludge quality and disposal options. This study used sensory and instrumental analysis to examine the variation of odor characteristics in sludge treated with advanced anaerobic digestion. Volatile sulfur compounds, indole, 3-methylindole, and geosmin were identified as key odorants. The dewatering process improved the sludge odor by reducing the concentration of volatile sulfur compounds. The study also found that the quality of sludge after anaerobic digestion affected the emission capacity of certain odorants.

Positive feedback on dewaterability of waste-activated sludge by the conditioning process of Fe(II) catalyzing urea hydrogen peroxide

Dongbo Wang et al.

Summary: This study reports the use of Fe(II) activated Urea hydrogen peroxide (UHP) to improve the dewaterability of waste activated sludge (WAS). Fe(II)/UHP significantly improved WAS dewaterability by generating center dot OH, which attacked extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs) and cells, leading to the liberation of bound water. Fe(II)/UHP treatment also reduced heavy metals in the dewatered sludge, making it suitable for land application. The Fe(II)/UHP process is cost-effective and practical compared to other methods.
