Syntrophic bacteria- and Methanosarcina-rich acclimatized microbiota with better carbohydrate metabolism enhances biomethanation of fractionated lignocellulosic biocomponents

Bikram Basak et al.

Summary: Compared to conventional anaerobic digester sludge, a microbial consortium acclimatized to lignocellulose shows higher biogas productivity and methane yield. The dominant members within the Firmicutes, Bacteroidota, and Halobacteriota phyla are responsible for the increased methane production, while the abundance of syntrophic bacteria such as Proteiniphilum, Fermentimonas, Syntrophomonas, and Methanosarcina helps maintain digester stability and improve substrate-to-methane conversion.

Microbial Taxonomy Run Amok

Robert A. Sanford et al.

Summary: DNA sequencing has led to a surge in discovery of microbial phylogenetic novelty, but the lack of adaptation of the International Code of Nomenclature of Prokaryotes has resulted in a 'wild west' situation where names are published without proper verification. The rapid spread of variant naming methods has caused confusion and inconsistencies, endangering the interoperability of scientific findings. The immediate solution is to establish and adopt universal best practices accepted by experts and international organizations.
