Recent Developments and Trends in Asymmetric Organocatalysis

Olga Garcia Mancheno et al.

Summary: Since the early reports by von Liebig, Knoevenagel and Bredig, asymmetric organocatalysis has come a long way, culminating in the 2021 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. This Perspective provides a brief introduction by discussing the historical development, classical methods, and selected advanced recent examples that have opened new directions in this growing field.

Imidodiphosphorimidates (IDPis): Catalyst Motifs with Unprecedented Reactivity and Selectivity

Jun Kee Cheng et al.

Summary: Conceptually designed imidodiphosphorimidates (IDPis) are highly effective chiral acid catalysts with enzyme-like active sites and high acidity. They have a wide range of applications as Bronsted acid catalysts and precatalysts for silylium Lewis acids, enabling previously intractable carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom bond formation reactions with high reactivity and selectivity. The high structural confinement allows for precise control of stereo- and chemoselectivity, offering unique opportunities for controlling high-energy cation intermediates.

The Power of the Proton: From Superacidic Media to Superelectrophile Catalysis

Hendrik F. T. Klare et al.

Summary: Superacidic media are famous for their connection with carbocations, but not all reactive intermediates can be generated, characterized, and isolated from these Bronsted acid/Lewis acid cocktails. The counteranion in these systems is often too nucleophilic and may engage in redox chemistry with the newly formed cation. The success of molecular Bronsted superacids is determined by the chemical robustness of the counteranion, revolutionizing the field.

Unified Approach to Imidodiphosphate-Type Bronsted Acids with Tunable Confinement and Acidity

Sebastian A. Schwengers et al.

Summary: A single-flask synthesis method for efficient Bronsted acids was developed, allowing for the rapid production of imidodiphosphate-based compounds. The catalysts exhibit high structural confinement and a wide acidity range, with one catalyst showing highly enantioselective sulfoxidation activity. Additionally, a novel super acidic catalyst motif, IDPii, was discovered, demonstrating extreme reactivity in the alpha-methylation reaction of a silyl ketene acetal with methanol.

N-Triflylphosphoramides: highly acidic catalysts for asymmetric transformations

Guillermo Caballero-Garcia et al.

Summary: N-Triflylphosphoramides (NTPA) have emerged as popular catalysts for enantioselective transformations due to their stronger Bronsted acid properties compared to phosphoric acids (PA). This review categorizes NTPA-catalyzed reactions based on the enantio-determining step and highlights their use in total synthesis.
