An Upper Bound Visualization of Design Trade-Offs in Adsorbent Materials for Gas Separations: CO2, N2, CH4, H2, O2, Xe, Kr, and Ar Adsorbents

Samuel J. Edens et al.

Summary: Over the past 20 years, there have been numerous publications on the study of porous solids for gas adsorption and separation. This work specifically focuses on the challenge of comprehensively understanding the field, identifying leading design strategies, and selecting materials for process modeling due to the abundance of adsorbent materials. The application of the empirical bound visualization technique to adsorbents for various gas pairs is presented, along with discussions on breaking design trade-offs and the limitations of bound visualizations.

Low-concentration CO2 capture using metal-organic frameworks - current status and future perspectives

Michelle Ahlen et al.

Summary: The increasing atmospheric CO2 level is believed to be the main cause of climate change. While transitioning to sustainable energy sources would reduce CO2 emissions, it might take time for global implementation. However, capturing CO2 from emission sources or directly from the atmosphere can quickly reduce CO2 concentration. This perspective discusses the development of metal-organic framework (MOF)-based solid sorbents for low-concentration CO2 capture, highlighting different engineering approaches and immediate challenges. MOF-based materials, with their customizable properties and ease of handling, offer potential as low-cost, efficient CO2 sorbents for capturing low-concentration CO2.

Preparation of an electrochemical sensor based on a HKUST-1/CoFe2O4/SiO2-modified carbon paste electrode for determination of azaperone

Masoumeh Ghalkhani et al.

Summary: CoFe2O4@SiO2@HKUST-1 was prepared using a multi-step self-assembly technique and characterized using X-ray diffraction spectrum and field emission scanning electron microscopy. A sensitive modified carbon paste electrode (CPE/CoFe2O4@SiO2@HKUST-1) was constructed for detecting azaperone (AZN). The electrochemical oxidation of AZN on the CPE/CoFe2O4@SiO2@HKUST-1 surface exhibited impressive electrocatalytic effect, and the oxidation process followed a diffusion-adsorption dual process favorable for response boosting. The modified CPE with better conductivity and larger surface area achieved a wide linear range for AZN determination and a low detection limit.

Nitrogen-doped microporous carbon materials derived from DBU-modified carboxylic acid polymers for CO2 capture

Kai Ge et al.

Summary: Nitrogen-doped microporous carbon materials were synthesized from carbonization of 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0] undec-7-ene modified carboxylic acid polymers. The introduction of DBU increased the surface nitrogen content, specific surface area, and pore volume of the resulting carbon material. The nonactivated porous carbon exhibited high CO2 capture capacity and selectivity, and showed great stability and reusability.

Excellent humidity sensor based on ultrathin HKUST-1 nanosheets

Qiaoe Wang et al.

Summary: This study synthesized two kinds of HKUST-1 crystals, revealing that nanosheets have a wider humidity detection range and faster response rate. The research highlighted the important role of hydrophilic ligands in improving adsorption capacity and accelerating proton transfer and water molecule movement in HKUST-1 nanosheets. Additionally, the sensitivity of the BPQDs/HKUST-1 composite sensing platform was significantly improved compared to HKUST-1 alone, due to the excellent proton transfer capability of BPQDs.
