Tetraphenylethene-based macrocycles: Visualized monitoring the hydrolysis of silicon-oxygen bond and their tunable luminescent properties

Mingxue Feng et al.

Summary: In this study, a series of circular tetraphenylethylene (TPE) derivatives connected with different lengths of the siloxanes chain were successfully designed and synthesized. The fluorescence quenching phenomenon gradually occurred at the molecular level as the chain length increased, providing direct evidence for the effect of chain lengths in the restricted intramolecular rotation (RIR) mechanism with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) phenomenon. The kinetics of silicon-oxygen bond hydrolysis were successfully monitored in real-time using the AIE method with the RIR mechanism, providing a unique visualization window for kinetic control of Si-O bond hydrolysis. The obtained half-life and reaction kinetic data of Si-O bond-breaking reaction at different pH values can serve as a reference for scientists and engineers in both fundamental research and industrial production. Moreover, the study also demonstrated the potential of intelligent luminescent materials through aggregation-induced color-tunable emission with different aggregation forms of molecules.

Morphology-Dependent Aggregation-Induced Emission of Janus Emulsion Surfactants

Pablo Simon Marques et al.

Summary: We present a novel stimuli-responsive fluorescent material platform based on aggregation-induced emission (AIE) from tetraphenylethylene (TPE)-based surfactants localized at one hemisphere of biphasic micro-scale Janus emulsion droplets. By modulating the interfacial tensions of the droplet constituent phases, we achieve controllable modulation of the available interfacial area of surfactant-functionalized liquid-liquid interfaces. The selective assembly of synthesized TPE-based surfactants on the respective droplet interfaces leads to a morphology-dependent alteration of the interfacial area and evokes a significant increase in the emission intensity of the droplets.

Summary: In this study, we demonstrated the construction of a composite system with turn-on mechanofluorochromism by incorporating aggregation-induced emission (AIE) materials within metal-organic framework (MOF) single crystals. A chiral sensing platform based on chiral metal-organic framework for enantiodiscrimination of the isomers of tyrosine and tryptophan

Ning Liu et al.

Summary: Chiral metal-organic framework (ZIF-8) was synthesized using a two-step electrodeposition method with L-histidine (L-His) as the chiral source. The resulting chiral ZIF-8 (L-His-ZIF-8) was used for enantiodiscrimination of tyrosine (Tyr) and tryptophan (Trp) isomers. The opposite voltammetric behaviors of the isomers on the L-His-ZIF-8 modified electrode were explained by density functional theory (DFT). The pH and electrodeposition time were optimized for the highest recognition efficiency of the L-His-ZIF-8 modified electrode towards the isomers of Tyr and Trp.

Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) from poly(1,4-dihydropyridine)s synthesized by Hantzsch polymerization and their specific detection of Fe2+ ions

Xue Meng et al.

Summary: In this study, AIE-active PDPEs were prepared by introducing dihydropyridine rings into the main chain of the polymer, and successfully applied for the detection of Fe2+ ions. Comparative experiments revealed that the AIE performance of PDPEs was influenced by the rigid connection of the benzene ring, the appropriate CH2 spacer length, the dihydropyridine heterocycle, and intramolecular aggregation. The fluorescence of PDPEs was significantly affected by the polymer concentration, excitation wavelength, and precipitant used. Surprisingly, PDPEs were able to specifically recognize and detect Fe2+ ions even in the presence of other metal ions.
