Exceptional Electron-Rich Heteroaromatic Pentacycle for Ultralow Band Gap Conjugated Polymers and Photothermal Therapy

Christopher L. Anderson et al.

Summary: In this study, the synthesis of electron-rich fused pentacyclic pyrazino[2,3-b:5,6-b']diindolizine (PDIz) motif is described, and its optical and redox properties are detailed. PDIz exhibits a lower oxidation potential and a reduced optical band gap compared to the isoelectronic pentacene, while maintaining better air stability in both solution and the solid state. A series of conjugated polymers with band gaps as small as 0.71 eV are synthesized using the PDIz motif, and their tunable absorbance throughout the biologically relevant near-infrared I and II regions enables efficient photothermal therapy for cancer cell laser ablation.

Tridecacyclene Tetraimide: An Easily Reduced Cyclooctatetraene Derivative

Rakesh Kumar et al.

Summary: Tridecacyclene tetraimide (TCTI), an electron-deficient non-benzenoid nanocarbon, was synthesized with a concise method. TCTI has a non-planar structure and forms pi-stacked dimers in the solid state. In solution, it undergoes eight single-electron reductions, resulting in a range of negatively charged states. The TCTI anions exhibit extended near-infrared absorptions, with a strong band at 1692 nm for the dianion. Computational analysis indicates that the stability of TCTI anions is attributed to the electron-deficient imide groups and the local aromaticity of the reduced acenaphthylene units. TCTI shows potential applications in electrochromic and charge storage fields.

Geometrical and Electronic Structure of Cation Radical Species of Tetraarylanthraquinodimethane: An Intermediate for Unique Electrochromic Behavior

Yusuke Ishigaki et al.

Summary: Two tetraarylanthraquinodimethane derivatives with different aryl groups were synthesized and their structures in both neutral and dications states were characterized. The cation radicals of the new derivatives showed long lifetime, and their geometric and electronic structures were investigated through electrochemical and theoretical methods. The dications exhibited tricolor electrochromic behavior with a hysteretic pattern of color change.

Anionic Boron- and Carbon-Based Hetero-Diradicaloids Spanned by a p-Phenylene Bridge

Avijit Maiti et al.

Summary: This study presents the synthesis and characterization of anionic boron- and carbon-based Kekule diradicaloids connected by a p-phenylene bridge, which exhibit triplet state properties at room temperature. Additionally, the formation of an isolable diamino(4-diarylboryl-phenyl)methyl radical was observed during the synthesis process.

Hysteretic Three-State Redox Interconversion among Zigzag Bisquinodimethanes with Non-fused Benzene Rings and Twisted Tetra-/Dications with [5]/[3]Acenes Exhibiting Near-Infrared Absorptions

Yusuke Ishigaki et al.

Summary: Octaaryl-substituted bisquinodimethanes (BQDs) with a zigzag structure were designed as redox-switchable molecules that can undergo four-electron oxidation to produce tetracationic pentacenes with a doubly twisted structure. By stepwise two-electron reduction, the tetracationic pentacenes can be transformed into dicationic anthracenes and then back to the original BQDs. The structures and UV-vis-NIR spectra of these molecules can be controlled by redox stimuli, as they exhibit near-infrared absorptions based on an intramolecular charge-transfer interaction.

A crystalline radical cation derived from Thiele's hydrocarbon with redox range beyond 1 V

Ying Kai Loh et al.

Summary: The authors prepared an unsymmetrical organoboron analogue of Thiele's hydrocarbon and studied its oxidation reactions, revealing that the radical cation is stable over a redox range of > 1 V and can be isolated. This strategy not only broadens the redox stability window of the compound but also has the potential to be extended to other transient organic radicals.

Derya Bessinger et al.

Summary: Electrochromic thin films based on covalent organic frameworks (COFs) exhibit high coloration efficiency and fast switching speeds, with reversible absorption changes of close to 3 OD triggered at low operating voltages and low charge per unit area. The champion material reaches a coloration efficiency of 858 cm(2) C-1 at 880 nm and maintains >95% of its response over 100 oxidation/reduction cycles, with extremely fast response times below 0.4 seconds for oxidation and around 0.2 seconds for reduction.

Redox-active tetraaryldibenzoquinodimethanes

Yusuke Ishigaki et al.

Summary: Quinodimethanes (QDs) are non-aromatic pi-conjugated compounds that can interconvert in response systems. Adding four phenyl groups to QDs increases their stability, and further dibenzo-annulation can drastically increase stability. Many derivatives have been developed with these modifications.

Water soluble organic electrochromic materials

Thomas A. Welsh et al.

Summary: Organic materials offer advantages over transition metal oxides in electrochromic device applications, but the use of organic solvents in their processing presents challenges due to their flammability and toxicity. Developing water soluble organic materials is crucial for long-term economic and environmental sustainability of organic electronics research.
