Unveiling facet-dependent degradation and facet engineering for stable perovskite solar cells

Chunqing Ma et al.

Summary: Many studies have been conducted to improve the stability of perovskite films, but the role of different perovskite crystal facets in stability remains unknown. In this study, we investigate the underlying mechanisms of facet-dependent degradation of formamidinium lead iodide (FAPbI3) films. We find that the (100) facet is more susceptible to moisture-induced degradation than the (111) facet. Through experimental and theoretical studies, we uncover the degradation mechanisms and observe a d-phase transition on the (100) facet due to strong water adhesion and elongated lead-iodine (Pb-I) bond distance. Manipulating the crystal structure to achieve a higher fraction of the (111) facet leads to exceptional stability of FAPbI3 films against moisture. Our findings provide insights into unknown facet-dependent degradation mechanisms and kinetics.

Low-pressure accessible gas-quenching for absolute methylammonium-free perovskite solar cells

Tian Hou et al.

Summary: Gas-quenching with TMSO enables the fabrication of high-quality FA(0.9)Cs(0.1)PbI(3) perovskite films without the use of MA cation. The technique regulates intermediate films and results in superior stability in MA-free perovskite devices without any passivation treatment. The PSCs fabricated without MA and Br additives exhibit a power conversion efficiency of 21.3% and demonstrate promising potential for scalable manufacturing of high-efficiency MA-free PSCs.

Rational Surface-Defect Control via Designed Passivation for High-Efficiency Inorganic Perovskite Solar Cells

Xiaojing Gu et al.

Summary: Iodine vacancies and undercoordinated Pb2+ are the main causes of nonradiative charge recombination in all-inorganic perovskite films, while passivation with histamine (HA) significantly reduces surface trap density and prolongs charge lifetime, leading to an increased solar cell efficiency.

Perovskite solar cells with atomically coherent interlayers on SnO2 electrodes

Hanul Min et al.

Summary: By introducing an interlayer between the electron-transporting and perovskite layers in perovskite solar cells, researchers have successfully enhanced charge extraction and transport from the perovskite, leading to higher power conversion efficiency and fewer interfacial defects. The coherent interlayer allowed the fabrication of devices with a certified efficiency of 25.5%, which maintained about 90% of its initial efficiency even after continuous light exposure for 500 hours. The findings provide guidelines for designing defect-minimizing interfaces in metal halide perovskites and electron-transporting layers.
