Layer-Stacking Sequence Governs Ion-Storage in Layered Double Hydroxides

Tomohito Sudare et al.

Summary: In layered materials, the stacking sequence can affect ion transport and storage properties. However, the relationship between the stacking sequence and anion transport and storage properties is not well understood. In this study, we found that the stacking sequence influences the nitrate-storage properties of layered double hydroxides. The 2H1 polytype has a higher nitrate-storage capacity compared to the 3R1 polytype. The difference in nitrate-storage capacity is attributed to the soft nature of the 2H1 polytype, which allows minimal lattice changes, while the rigid lattice of the 3R1 sequence requires a larger lattice expansion, hindering ion storage.

Ab Initio Evaluation of Solid-State Transformation Pathways from Ferrihydrite to Goethite

Michel Sassi et al.

Summary: Phase transformations between iron (oxyhydr)oxide minerals can occur through self-diffusion of ions in the solid state. However, it is unclear how important solid-state transformation pathways are under ambient conditions, especially for nanoparticles. In this study, density functional theory was used to evaluate the possibility of solid-state transformation from ferrihydrite (Fh) to goethite (Gt). The results show that solid-state transformation pathways to Gt are unlikely to be accessible for Fh nanoparticles under ambient conditions, suggesting the importance of other pathways.

Defining the challenges of Li extraction with olivine host: The roles of competitor and spectator ions

Gangbin Yan et al.

Summary: The lithium supply issue is mainly due to the limitations of current mining methods in accessing dilute and complex lithium sources. Electrochemical intercalation has emerged as a highly selective method for lithium extraction, but its applicability to unconventional water sources (UWS) is still not well understood. This study investigates the feasibility and challenges of lithium extraction from UWS using electrochemical intercalation, and shows the complex roles of major ions, such as Na+, Mg2+, and Ca2+, in the process. The key challenge for expanding the mining of UWS using the olivine host is to improve the selectivity of lithium over sodium.

Ion complexation waves emerge at the curved interfaces of layered minerals

Michael L. Whittaker et al.

Summary: This study investigates the visualization of hydrated interfaces and proposes a new method for direct imaging the electric double layer (EDL) structure of layered minerals. The presence of hydrated ion waves and their interactions with minerals are revealed. This research is of great significance for understanding geochemical processes and mineral behavior.

Ab initio thermodynamics reveals the nanocomposite structure of ferrihydrite

Michel Sassi et al.

Summary: Through ab initio thermodynamics simulations, it is revealed that ferrihydrite can be described as a nanocomposite of at least two previously-proposed single-phase models. The formation trends of ferrihydrite with different structural water content under varying temperature and water pressure conditions are also elucidated.

Technology for the Recovery of Lithium from Geothermal Brines

William T. Stringfellow et al.

Summary: This paper examines the challenges and latest technologies in developing sustainable lithium production from geothermal brines. The most advanced technology for direct lithium extraction from geothermal brines is adsorption of lithium using inorganic sorbents, with other promising extraction technologies still in early development stages.

Cooperative Sorption on Porous Materials

Seishi Shimizu et al.

Summary: This paper explores the relationship between sorption isotherms and molecular interactions, proposing a cooperative sorption isotherm model and deriving it through statistical thermodynamic methods. The model eliminates assumptions on adsorption sites, layers, and pore geometry, instead explaining the adsorption mechanism based on the statistical characteristics of sorbates.

Effects of interlayer confinement and hydration on capacitive charge storage in birnessite

Shelby Boyd et al.

Summary: Nanostructured birnessite demonstrates high specific capacitance and ideal capacitive behavior in aqueous electrolytes, making it a promising electrode material for low-cost, high-power energy storage devices. Capacitive charge storage in birnessite is governed by interlayer cation intercalation, facilitated by the presence of nanoconfined interlayer structural water mediating interactions between the intercalated cation and the birnessite host, resulting in minimal structural changes.
