Move Aside Pentacene: Diazapentacene-Doped para-Terphenyl, a Zero-Field Room-Temperature Maser with Strong Coupling for Cavity Quantum Electrodynamics

Wern Ng et al.

Summary: Masers can provide ultralow-noise amplification of microwave signals in medical imaging and deep-space communication. The discovery of 6,13-diazapentacene doped in para-terphenyl (DAP:PTP) as a maser gain medium that can operate at room-temperature without an external magnetic field has rekindled research in this field. The results of this work pave the way for future discovery of similar maser materials and their applications in quantum sensors, optoelectronic devices, and cavity quantum electrodynamic effects at room-temperature.

QM/MM optimization with quantum coupling: Host-guest interactions in a pentacene-doped p-terphenyl crystal

Andres I. Bertoni et al.

Summary: In this work, a novel force-based scheme for hybrid quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) computations is presented. The scheme is particularly relevant for simulating host-guest molecular systems and accurately describing the explicit electronic interactions between a guest molecule and a classically described host. By applying the scheme to the optimization of a technologically important host-guest molecular system, a pentacene-doped p-terphenyl crystal, it is shown that the proposed Quantum-Coupling QM/MM scheme can reproduce explicit interactions in the minimum energy configuration for the host-guest complex. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that these explicit interactions result in an oriented net electric dipole moment in the host-guest complex, which is responsible for red-shifting the energy of the first singlet-singlet electronic excitation of pentacene.

Room-temperature optically detected magnetic resonance of triplet excitons in a pentacene-doped picene single crystal

Fabrizio Moro et al.

Summary: The incorporation of functional molecules into organic single crystals allows for the tuning of optical and magnetic properties, making them versatile for opto-electronic and spintronic applications. In this study, isolated triplet exciton states were detected in high-quality single crystals of pentacene, demonstrating their distinct emission and absorptive resonance modes. Additionally, crystallographically oriented magnetic fields were found to efficiently tune the spin-dependent optical activities.

A Flexible Purely Organic Molecule Exhibiting Strong Spin-Orbital Coupling: Toward Nondoped Room-Temperature Phosphorescence OLEDs

Weidong Qiu et al.

Summary: This study discovered a strong spin-orbital coupling effect in a purely organic compound, achieving a high phosphorescence rate and intersystem crossing process. The flexible molecule skeleton and heavy atom sulfur and nitrogen atoms providing n-pi* transition character contribute to efficient spin-orbital coupling, leading to the fabrication of a high-efficiency purely organic phosphorescence light-emitting diode.

Enhanced quantum sensing with room-temperature solid-state masers

Hao Wu et al.

Summary: Quantum sensing using solid-state electron spin systems is widely applicable in various fields, and the use of reborn maser technology has overcome the drawbacks of broadened linewidth and inefficient readout in solid-state spin ensembles. The maser-based readout has resulted in a fourfold reduction in linewidth and a high signal-to-noise ratio in near zero-field magnetometry.

Halide-Enhanced Spin-Orbit Coupling and the Phosphorescence Rate in Ir(III) Complexes

Marsel Z. Shafikov et al.

Summary: The phosphorescence rate in Ir(III) complexes can be increased by enhancing the spin-orbit coupling effect through the introduction of metal-coordinated halides, such as in the example of the dinuclear Ir2I2 complex. The exchange of chlorides for iodides significantly contributes to the enhancement of the phosphorescence rate by increasing the contribution of halides to the spin-orbit coupling effect.

Spin Statistics for Triplet-Triplet Annihilation Upconversion: Exchange Coupling, Intermolecular Orientation, and Reverse Intersystem Crossing

David G. Bossanyi et al.

Summary: Triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion (TTA-UC) has the potential to significantly improve light harvesting capabilities, with the spin statistical factor eta being critical in determining the overall efficiency. Experimental studies using solid rubrene as a model system suggest that weakly exchange-coupled triplet-pair states are formed first during triplet annihilation. Probing high-level reverse intersystem crossing channels in new annihilator molecules may prove to be a promising strategy to exceed the spin statistical limit.
