Highly Negative Poisson's Ratio in Thermally Conductive Covalent Organic Frameworks

Ashutosh Giri et al.

Summary: This article demonstrates that stacks of two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks possess unique physical properties, including low densities, high thermal conductivities, and highly negative Poisson's ratios. These properties arise from their singular layered architecture and structural modularity.

Large-Area 2D Covalent Organic Framework Membranes with Tunable Single-Digit Nanopores for Predictable Mass Transport

Rahul Shevate et al.

Summary: This study successfully synthesized large-area and ultra-thin 2D COFs using a simple interfacial polymerization technique. The COFs demonstrated tunable properties, resulting in high solvent fluxes and sharp molecular weight cutoffs in COF membranes. The research also found that the pore passage resistance and membrane critical interfacial tension influence mass transport.

Controlled n-Doping of Naphthalene-Diimide-Based 2D Polymers

Austin M. Evans et al.

Summary: The bulk conductivity of 2D polymers (2DPs) can be enhanced by controlled n-doping. Optical and transient microwave spectroscopy measurements show that the n-doped 2DPs exhibit desired electronic properties. Density functional theory calculations reveal the main contribution to electronic conductivity in 2DPs. This study provides a new approach for synthesizing 2DPs with specific conductive properties.

Two-Dimensional Polymers and Polymerizations

Austin M. Evans et al.

Summary: Synthetic chemists have developed various methods to synthesize molecules, polymers, and networks, but have long lacked the ability to prepare two-dimensional polymers from designed monomers. Recent advances in polymerization strategies and characterization methods have enabled the realization of covalently linked macromolecular sheets. Three predominant 2D polymerization strategies have emerged, producing 2DPs as either monolayers or multilayer assemblies.

A Semiconducting Two-Dimensional Polymer as an Organic Electrochemical Transistor Active Layer

Reem B. Rashid et al.

Summary: Organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) have great potential in bioelectronic sensing, circuits, and neuromorphic hardware. The use of organic mixed ionic/electronic conductors (OMIECs) as the active channel allows for precise control of electronic and ion transport. Two-dimensional polymers (2DPs) offer new opportunities to control OECT performance by providing well-defined channels for ion transport.

Exciton Diffusion and Annihilation in an sp2 Carbon-Conjugated Covalent Organic Framework

Xinzi Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, the optical and optoelectronic properties of 2D COFs were investigated using transient absorption spectroscopy. The results showed that pyrene excitons in the framework could diffuse through the structure, while the emissive state in the polycrystalline solid was influenced by C=C linkages. The kinetics of a photoinduced absorption signal in the near-infrared region indicated 3D exciton diffusion and exciton-exciton annihilation driven by resonance interactions. Furthermore, it was found that increasing the excitation intensity could enhance the exciton diffusion length, suggesting a potential role of lattice temperature in exciton mobility in COF colloids.

Aligned macrocycle pores in ultrathin films for accurate molecular sieving

Zhiwei Jiang et al.

Summary: In this study, we successfully created ordered pores in an ultra-thin nanofilm by synthesizing selectively functionalized macrocycles with differentiated reactivities. The size of the subnanometre macrocycle pores in the nanofilm surfaces could be precisely tailored by varying the macrocycle identity. Compared to disordered membranes, aligned macrocycle membranes exhibited higher permeance and selectivity. In high-value separations, such as enriching cannabidiol oil, the aligned macrocycle membranes achieved significantly faster ethanol transport and higher enrichment.

Summary: This review discusses a family of atomistic, mostly quantum chemistry based semiempirical methods for describing large molecules in gas and condensed phase. These methods are derived from a density functional perturbation expansion and emphasize parameter availability for almost the entire periodic table, with improvements in atomic orbital basis set and interaction treatments. The methods are consistent with accurate gas phase theoretical reference data and have been extended for electronic spectra and response properties.

Impact of Structural Defects on the Elastic Properties of Two-Dimensional Covalent Organic Frameworks (2D COFs) under Tensile Stress

Haoyuan Li et al.

Summary: 2D COFs, as a type of permanently porous and lightweight material, have complex mechanical properties with Young's moduli dependent on stretching direction. The presence of structural defects can significantly impact their mechanical properties, with vacancies causing a large decrease in Young's modulus. These results highlight the anisotropic elastic nature of 2D COFs and provide important insights for their potential applications.
