Grains - a major source of sustainable protein for health

Kaisa S. Poutanen et al.

Summary: Cereal grains are a significant source of dietary energy, carbohydrates, and plant proteins worldwide, but are mostly used for animal feed rather than human consumption. The underutilized potential of cereal plant proteins could be harnessed by shifting grain use towards traditional and conceptually new foods, improving protein security and mitigating climate change.

Chemical Composition and Cytotoxic Activity of the Fractionated Trunk Bark Essential Oil from Tetraclinis articulata (Vahl) Mast. Growing in Tunisia

Salma Jlizi et al.

Summary: The chemical composition and cytotoxic effects of Tetraclinis articulata trunk bark essential oil were investigated in this study. The oil contained relatively high amounts of oxygenated sesquiterpenes and displayed moderate to weak cytotoxic activity against human mammary carcinoma and colorectal carcinoma cell lines. The colorectal carcinoma cell line showed more sensitivity to the essential oil compared to the breast cancer cell line.

Wastewater to Ecological Dyeing Process and Bioactive Compounds Resources: Case Study of Dittrichia graveolens Hydrodistillation Aqueous Residue

Nawres Gharred et al.

Summary: This study focused on the valorization of aqueous residues generated by the extraction process of essential oils, exploring their potential in ecological dyeing and biological applications. Through phytochemical analysis, it was found that the aqueous residue contained a significant amount of polyphenols and flavonoids, with catechin and quercetin identified as coloring molecules. By optimizing the eco-dyeing process on polyamide fabric, the aqueous residue demonstrated high color yield and potential as a source of bioactive compounds with antioxidant, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and cytotoxic properties.

Cyclic and acyclic alcohols: a structure-activity relationship study correlation between insecticidal activity and chemical structure

Amel Ben Hamouda et al.

Summary: The efficiency of essential oils depends on their chemical composition, and individual compounds may have a stronger effect than the oils themselves. In this study, acyclic alcohols showed higher insecticidal and repellent activities against Tribolium castaneum compared to cyclic alcohols. Understanding the efficiency of each chemical group allows for the development of more effective eco-friendly control agents through artificial combinations of different constituents.
