Graphene oxide toxicity in W1118 flies

Qing Guo et al.

Summary: The exposure of graphene oxide (GO) has been shown to have negative effects on fruit flies, including weight loss, delayed development, slower motion, and shortened lifespan. The toxicity of GO is related to its severe damage to nutrient absorption in fruit fly midguts, caused by the excessive accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) triggering oxidative stress. However, the influence of GO on the sex ratio and total number of pupae and adults of fruit flies is insignificant.

Safety Assessment of 2D MXenes: In Vitro and In Vivo

Jialong Wu et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the toxic effects of MXenes and their derivatives in biological systems. It finds that MXenes generally have low cytotoxicity and good biocompatibility, but can be toxic to stem cells and embryos. The toxic effects are strongly associated with the dose of material, the cell type, the mode of exposure, and the specific type of MXene.

Nonmonotonic Relationship between the Oxidation State of Graphene-Based Materials and Its Cell Membrane Damage Effects

Xiuhua Yin et al.

Summary: The oxidation state of graphene derivatives has a nonmonotonic effect on their destructive effects on cell membranes, with medium oxygen content showing the most serious destructive effects. The decrease in surface oxygenated groups exposes more sp2 carbon area, facilitating the damage of cell membranes, while fewer oxygenated groups lead to the accumulation of graphene-based nanosheets, reducing the extraction effect on cell membranes. This study provides important insights for the application of graphene derivatives in biomedicine.

Antibacterial, antifungal, and anticancer potential of two-dimensional Ti3C2Tx MXene

Maqusood Ahamed et al.

Summary: In this study, the antimicrobial and anticancer potential of two-dimensional titanium carbide (Ti3C2Tx) MXene was explored. The results demonstrated significant antimicrobial activity of Ti3C2Tx against various bacteria and dose-dependent cytotoxicity in cancer cells. Importantly, Ti3C2Tx showed no cytotoxicity to normal cells. This study highlights the potential application of 2D Ti3C2Tx nanosheets in medicine.

Comparison of toxicity of Ti3C2and Nb2C Mxene quantum dots (QDs) to human umbilical vein endothelial cells

Manyu Gu et al.

Summary: The study suggests that Ti(3)C(2)QDs induce cytotoxicity to HUVECs by causing autophagy dysfunction, while Nb2C QDs are more biocompatible to HUVECs at the same mass concentrations. The composition of Mxene QDs determines their toxicity to human endothelial cells.

Cytotoxicity of MXene-based nanomaterials for biomedical applications: A mini review

Gim Pao Lim et al.

Summary: MXene based nanomaterial is a promising two-dimensional material with versatile properties for applications in electronic devices, power generation, sensors, drug delivery, and biomedicine. However, its cytotoxic effects remain a major concern, with biocompatibility and cytotoxicity depending largely on its physicochemical properties, size, dose, and surface coating. Various in vitro and in vivo studies have been conducted to investigate the interactions between MXene and living organisms, with machine learning methods also being developed to predict cytotoxicity. Current research also focuses on addressing the cytotoxicity of MXene for biomedical interventions.

Protein corona reduced graphene oxide cytotoxicity by inhibiting endocytosis

Ying Yang et al.

Summary: The study found that graphene oxide caused cell damage through ROS induction and induced apoptosis in a protein-free environment. However, in the presence of protein, the cytotoxicity of graphene oxide was significantly reduced due to decreased internalization and ROS generation. Additionally, graphene oxide induced cell cycle arrest in the G0/G1 phase at low protein concentrations but showed minimal cytotoxicity at high protein concentrations.

Graphene oxide exacerbates dextran sodium sulfate-induced colitis via ROS/AMPK/p53 signaling to mediate apoptosis

Siliang Liu et al.

Summary: Our study found that graphene oxide (GO) worsened acute colitis in mice induced by dextran sodium sulfate (DSS) and exacerbated inflammation and apoptosis in intestinal epithelial cells (IECs) in vitro. This was due to the activation of the ROS/AMPK/p53 pathway. Inhibitors of this pathway effectively prevented GO-induced apoptosis in IECs.
