Dodecagonal Zinc Oxide (d-ZnO) Monolayer for Water Desalination and Detection of Toxic Gases

Yusuf Zuntu Abdullahi et al.

Summary: Nanoporous materials have diverse applications in nanodevices, and their usage aims to reduce weight while maintaining or improving structural stability. A two-dimensional dodecagonal zinc oxide (d-ZnO) monolayer is proposed for various applications, such as water membrane and gas detection. Studies on water permeability and ion rejection show that d-ZnO has low energy barriers for water molecules but high barriers for Na+ and Cl- ions. Additionally, d-ZnO exhibits high water permeability and preferentially detects NO2 and SO2 gases due to their high adsorption energy values.

Operando studies reveal active Cu nanograins for CO2 electroreduction

Yao Yang et al.

Summary: This study presents a comprehensive investigation of the structural dynamics of Cu nanocatalysts during the electrochemical synthesis of fuels and chemicals. The presence of active Cu nanograins under CO2 reduction conditions and their role in supporting C-C coupling reactions were observed. Quantitative structure-activity correlation revealed that a higher fraction of Cu nanograins leads to higher selectivity for C2+ products. This research provides a powerful platform for advancing our understanding of the complex structural evolution of nanocatalysts under electrochemical conditions.

Spatiotemporal imaging of charge transfer in photocatalyst particles

Ruotian Chen et al.

Summary: The water-splitting reaction using photocatalyst particles is a promising route for solar fuel production. In this study, researchers performed spatiotemporally resolved surface photovoltage measurements on cuprous oxide photocatalyst particles and found that photogenerated electrons are transferred to the catalytic surface quickly through inter-facet hot electron transfer, while photogenerated holes are transferred to a spatially separated surface and stabilized through selective trapping. These findings contribute to the efficient charge separation in photocatalysis and have implications for the rational design of photocatalysts.

Anisotropic In Situ Strain-Engineered Halide Perovskites for High Mechanical Flexibility

Da Bin Kim et al.

Summary: A nonconventional deposition technique has been proposed to enhance the mechanical flexibility of halide perovskite materials, resulting in substantial improvements in fracture energy. Structural simulations verified the origin of flexibility enhancements by in situ strain, showing anisotropic lattice distortion in the halide perovskites. These strain-dependent mechanical properties are expected to be useful for designing halides-based flexible devices.

First-principles calculations to investigate electronic properties of ZnO/PtSSe van der Waals heterostructure: Effects of vertical strain and electric field

A. Kartamyshev et al.

Summary: In this study, the electronic properties of ZnO/PtSSe van der Waals heterostructure were investigated using density functional theory. Two stable stacking configurations were identified as indirect semiconductors with smaller band gaps compared to the individual ZnO and PtSSe monolayers. The band gap of the heterostructure is strongly influenced by the interlayer distance and electric field.

First-Principles Study on the Effect of Strain on Single-Layer Molybdenum Disulfide

Chen Chong et al.

Summary: This study investigated the electronic structure properties of single-layer MoS2 crystals under biaxial strain using density functional theory. Results showed a transition from direct to indirect band gap with small strain, maintaining characteristics of indirect band gap with increasing strain and linear decrease in band gap. Further analysis of density of states, sub-orbital density of states, thermodynamic parameters, and Raman spectroscopy revealed the strain-induced variations in single-layer MoS2, providing a theoretical basis for strain regulation of MoS2.
