Major and trace element emission rates in hydrothermal plumes in a tropical environment. The case of La Soufriere de Guadeloupe volcano

Manuel Inostroza et al.

Summary: This study characterizes the aerosols contained in steam- and H2S-rich plumes discharged from La Soufrie`re volcano and reports on their heavy metal degassing emission rates. The results show that the plume is enriched in lithophile, siderophile, and chalcophile elements, which are related to rock leaching, magma degassing, and hydrothermal processes. The heavy metal emission rates are relatively low, but La Soufrie`re still serves as an important pollution source in the Lesser Antilles volcanic arc.

Hydrothermal and magmatic contributions to surface waters in the Aso caldera, southern Japan: Implications for weathering processes in volcanic areas

Gibran Romero-Mujalli et al.

Summary: This study investigates the contribution of hydrothermal fluids to solute export in the Aso caldera, southern Japan, showing that they account for 67 to 91% of the total sulphate flux at the caldera outlet. The results highlight the significant influence of hydrothermal fluids on the sulphur budget, indicating a strong connection between volcanic activity and biogeochemical cycling.

Dispersion of arsenic species from highly explosive historical volcanic eruptions in Patagonia

Gonzalo Bia et al.

Summary: This study investigates the abundance, speciation, and dispersion of arsenic (As) in fresh volcanic ash from explosive Patagonian eruptions. Results show that the concentration, speciation, and mobility of As depend on the silica content of source magmas. Arsenic mainly accumulates on the surface of Al-silicate glass in volcanic ash. Atmospheric dispersion simulations reveal the impact of As-bearing ash on groundwater in Patagonia and surrounding areas.

Late Pleistocene subglacial fissure-related volcanism at Caviahue-Copahue Volcanic Complex (37° 51° S, 71° 05' W), South Volcanic Zone

Patricia Sruoga et al.

Summary: The Caviahue-Copahue Volcanic Complex is located 30 km eastward from the main Andean volcanic arc. The Copahue volcano has a well-documented historical eruptive record, while the volcano stratigraphy during Late Pleistocene and prehistoric times is poorly constrained due to the lack of reliable radiometric data.

Summary: This study presents an analysis of the volcanic plume from Copahue volcano in Argentina in 2016, using dispersion models and remote sensor data. The results show a good agreement between the modeled data and actual observations of gas and ash dispersion.

Structural control on shallow hydrogeochemical processes at Caviahue-Copahue Volcanic Complex (CCVC), Argentina

Summary: The study of thermal waters in the CCVC revealed that the water chemistry is mainly influenced by exchange with volcanic rocks and steam. The radiocarbon-based residence times indicate a minimum age of 13,540 to 17,520 years for the geothermal waters, while the helium isotopes show a wide range from mantle-derived to crustal radiogenic values.

Low-Energy Fragmentation Dynamics at Copahue Volcano (Argentina) as Revealed by an Infrasonic Array and Ash Characteristics

Marcia Hantusch et al.

Summary: Ash-rich eruptions from volcanoes pose serious risks to nearby populations and environments. Infrasonic amplitudes can reflect the intensity and efficiency of volcanic eruptions. The production of volcanic ash is influenced by magma properties and gas overpressure, with low magma overpressure potentially leading to lower ejection velocities of ash during explosive events.
