History repeats itself again: Will the mistakes of the past for ILs be repeated for DESs? From being considered ionic liquids to becoming their alternative: the unbalanced turn of deep eutectic solvents

Summary: The establishment of Deep Eutectic Solvents (DESs) as a new class of green solvents was initially based on naive comparisons with Ionic Liquids (ILs), but further research has emphasized the need for a thermodynamic definition and differentiation from other solvents. This perspective review presents experimental and computational data to dispel myths about DESs and make fair comparisons with other solvents, such as ILs, eutectic solvents (ESs), and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The unique potential of DESs in biopolymer dissolution and treatment is highlighted, along with considerations for recycling and techno-economic aspects.

Extraction of curcumin from turmeric residue (Curcuma longa L.) using deep eutectic solvents and surfactant solvents

Summary: This study used deep eutectic solvents (DESs) and surfactant solvents (SSs) to extract curcumin from turmeric residues (TRs). Choline chloride-propylene glycol (ChCl-Pro) showed the highest yield among the solvents used. The optimized extraction conditions achieved a curcumin yield of 54.2 mg g(-1), which was 1.31 times higher than using methanol as a solvent. The recovered curcumin exhibited antioxidant and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitory activities.

Ultrasonic-assisted extraction of polysaccharide from Dendrobium officinale: Kinetics, thermodynamics and optimization

Summary: In this study, Dendrobium officinale polysaccharide (DOP) was successfully extracted from Dendrobium officinale using ultrasonic-assisted hot water extraction (UHWE). Response surface method (RSM) Box-Behnken design was used to optimize the operating conditions and a kinetic model for the extraction process was established according to Fick's second law. The thermodynamic studies showed that the extraction process was endergonic and not spontaneous. The final optimal condition obtained by comparison was 353.15 K, 60:1 mL/g, and 60% for 150 min, with low energy consumption, high mass transfer, and high yield.

Microwave and ultrasound assisted extraction of phytocompounds from black jamun pulp: Kinetic and thermodynamics characteristics

Summary: The study focused on extracting phenolic compounds, anthocyanin, and antioxidants from black jamun pulp using microwave and ultrasound assisted extraction processes. Both methods showed high efficiency and applicability, with the pseudo-second order model used to represent extraction kinetics and effective diffusion coefficients. The negative Gibbs free energy change values indicated the feasibility and spontaneity of the extraction, while thermodynamic parameters suggested that the ultrasound assisted extraction process was endothermic and irreversible.

Sustainable extraction of polyphenols from millet using switchable deep eutectic solvents

Summary: In this study, polyphenols were successfully extracted from millet using a combination of high hydrostatic pressure pretreatment and switchable deep eutectic solvent extraction. The use of switchable solvents allowed for the recovery and reuse of polyphenols. Extraction of flavonoids from Glycyrrhiza residues using deep eutectic solvents and its molecular mechanism

Summary: The re-extraction of bioactive compounds from Chinese herb residues is significant for the maximum utilization of biomass resources. In this study, deep eutectic solvents were used to improve the efficiency of flavonoid extraction from Glycyrrhiza residues, achieving an extraction rate 83.03% higher than that of traditional solvents. The molecular mechanism analysis showed the significance of the strength of hydrogen bonding in the DES-flavonoid extraction process.

The results show that NDTE can effectively inhibit the corrosion of carbon steel in HCl solution and has a good corrosion inhibition performance. In addition, the inhibition mechanism of NDTE is studied using quantum chemical calculations and molecular dynamics simulation.

Extraction of flavonoids from Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride using a deep eutectic solvent

Summary: In this study, a new deep eutectic solvent (DES) was successfully used to extract the main flavonoids from Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride (CRPV). The optimal extraction conditions were determined, and a total of 21 flavonoids were identified in the extracts. Compared with traditional methods, this novel approach significantly improved extraction efficiency and saved time. The extracted flavonoids exhibited certain antioxidant and cytotoxic activities.

Optimization and modeling of microwave-assisted extraction of curcumin and antioxidant compounds from turmeric by using natural deep eutectic solvents

Summary: Natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES) have emerged as new green solvents for foods, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals due to their unique solvation power and low toxicity. The microwave assisted extraction method (MAE) was optimized using response surface methodology to obtain maximum total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and curcumin contents (CC) in extracts for each NADES, showing higher TAC and CC compared to conventional solvents. This proposed method is potentially efficient and sustainable for extracting antioxidants and curcumin from turmeric in pharmaceutical and food industries.
