Curving Engineering of Hollow Concave-Shaped Rhombic Dodecahedrons of N-Doped Carbon Encapsulated with Fe-Doped Co/Co3O4 Nanoparticles for an Efficient Oxygen Reduction Reaction and Zn-Air Batteries

Cling-Hui Kong et al.

Summary: For oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts, hybrids based on transition metal compounds with nitrogen-doped carbonaceous materials show great potential for replacing state-of-the-art noble metal-based catalysts. Engineering the morphology of the catalysts to provide a larger surface area with highly accessible active sites is an effective strategy to enhance the ORR performance. In this study, Fe-doped Co/Co3O4 nanoparticles encapsulated in a nitrogen-doped carbon matrix with a hollow concave-shaped rhombic dodecahedron structure were synthesized. The unique hollow concave-shaped structure increases the surface area, allowing for sufficient utilization of active sites and improved mass diffusion during the ORR. The Fe-Co/Co3O4@NC catalysts exhibit excellent ORR activity and demonstrate desirable performance in a homemade Zn-air battery.
