Foamed structured packing for mass-transfer equipment produced by an innovative 3D printing technology

D. Flagiello et al.

Summary: Packed columns are widely used in multi-phase reactors and separators. This study investigated the pressure drops and mass transfer rates of an innovative 3D foam-printed packing compared to commercial packing. The results showed that the new packing had slightly higher mass transfer efficiency and pressure drops, making it more suitable for certain applications.

Novel process design of desalination wastewater recovery for CO2 and SOX utilization

Sunghyun Cho et al.

Summary: Desalination is an effective method for industrial water supply, but it generates a large amount of wastewater. This study proposes a novel process for recovering CO2 and SOx from desalination wastewater, which can capture and utilize about 91% of the CO2 and achieve a desulfurization efficiency of 99%. The process is profitable and suitable for large-capacity operations.

A Novel Approach to Reduce the Environmental Footprint of Maritime Shipping

Domenico Flagiello et al.

Summary: Maritime shipping is a strategically important and globally managed industry, but the formulation of environmental regulations, particularly for atmospheric emissions, has been slowed down due to the need to accommodate different countries' regulations. Two main approaches for reducing sulphur emissions are through the use of low-sulphur fuels or exhaust gas cleaning systems, known as Scrubbers. However, the specific concerns related to these solutions include toxicity of by-products, fuel cost, and generation of polluting washwaters that may require treatment before discharge.

Study on hydrodynamic performance of structured packings for gas-liquid flow: Effects of geometry parameters

Biao Sun et al.

Summary: This study investigates the hydrodynamic performance of two structured packings and compares 3D-printed packing replicas with commercial packings. The results show that the 3D-printed replicas perform consistently well and provide more advantages in measuring liquid distribution.

A tool for mass transfer evaluation in packed-bed columns for chemical engineering students

D. Flagiello et al.

Summary: This paper presents a Microsoft Excel tool for calculating liquid-gas mass transfer coefficients in packed towers to support design activities in chemical engineering courses. The tool uses various models and a data library to estimate mass transfer coefficients for different types of packings, aiming to improve the accuracy of design algorithms and encourage comparison of correlations. The tool was introduced to students through tutorials and training sessions, with feedback collected through surveys to monitor its application and approval rating.

A Review on Gas-Liquid Mass Transfer Coefficients in Packed-Bed Columns

Domenico Flagiello et al.

Summary: This review thoroughly analyzes the most famous mass transfer models for random and structured packed-bed columns used in absorption/stripping and distillation processes, highlighting the criticalities behind the models and novel experimental and simulation approaches aimed at better describing the gas-liquid multiphase flow dynamics in packed-bed columns. Improved estimation of fluid-dynamic parameters will provide a more accurate modelling correlation of liquid-gas mass transfer phenomena in packed columns.
