Assessment of the aerobic and anaerobic biodegradation of contaminants of emerging concern in sludge using batch reactors

Fabricio Motteran et al.

Summary: This study investigated the degradation of xenobiotic compounds under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. The results showed that the degradation rate of surfactants was faster under aerobic conditions and could be removed by different inoculums, while no degradation was observed under anaerobic conditions. Ethanol was found to facilitate the degradation of surfactants in anaerobic environments.

Personalized microbiome-driven effects of non-nutritive sweeteners on human glucose tolerance

Jotham Suez et al.

Summary: This study found that the consumption of non-nutritive sweeteners (NNS) may alter the microbiome and glycemic responses in humans. Different NNS had distinct effects on the microbiome and glycemic responses, with saccharin and sucralose significantly impairing glycemic responses. Additionally, when NNS were supplemented to mice, the glycemic responses reflected those in respective human donors and were influenced by microbial signals.

Nonnutritive sweeteners can promote the dissemination of antibiotic resistance through conjugative gene transfer

Zhigang Yu et al.

Summary: The study found that commonly used nonnutritive sweeteners may enhance plasmid-mediated conjugative transfer between bacteria, increasing the spread of antibiotic resistance genes. Bacteria exposed to these compounds produced more reactive oxygen species, triggered the SOS response, and experienced increased cell membrane permeability.

Removal of low-calorie sweeteners at five Brazilian wastewater treatment plants and their occurrence in surface water

Priscilla da Costa Cunha Alves et al.

Summary: The consumption of low-calorie sweeteners is increasing globally. A study in Brazil found ACE, SUC, SAC, CYC in sewage treatment plants, with different treatment processes affecting their removal. The sweeteners were found to be harmless to biota.

Bromine and iodine species in drinking water supply system along the Changjiang River in China: Occurrence and transformation

Xiaoqiu Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the speciation and transformation of bromine and iodine along the Changjiang River in drinking water supply system, revealing an apparent increase of organic bromine and iodine concentrations after treatment, possibly influenced by chlorine-containing disinfectant. Furthermore, concentrations of bromine and iodine in the river were found to increase with the direction of flow, and were correlated with the concentrations of artificial sweeteners and domestic sewage.

The Use of Non-Nutritive and Low-Calorie Sweeteners in 19,915 Local and Imported Pre-Packaged Foods in Hong Kong

Billy Yin O. Sing et al.

Summary: This study examined the use of non-nutritive and low-calorie sweeteners in pre-packaged foods in Hong Kong, finding that these sweeteners were commonly used in non-diet products, especially in snacks like potato crisps and confectionery. The co-presence of NNSs and LCSs with free sugar ingredients was most common in confectionery and snack foods. Asian prepackaged foods were more likely to contain NNSs/LCSs compared with those from other regions.
