Favorable Electrocatalytic Ammonia Oxidation Reaction Thermodynamics on the β-NiOOH(0001) Surface Computed by Density Functional Theory

Rachelle M. Choueiri et al.

Summary: In this study, the mechanism of ammonia oxidation on the NiOOH surface was investigated, revealing that surfaces with hydroxide vacancies favored NH2-NH2 coupling, while surfaces with oxygen vacancies favored NH-NH coupling. Compared to Ni(OH)2 surface, NiOOH surface showed lower computed onset potentials.

Electrochemically active surface area controls HER activity for FexNi100-x films in alkaline electrolyte

Sergio I. Perez Bakovic et al.

Summary: The study found that films with higher Fe content exhibited higher electrocatalytic activity in alkaline media, while intrinsic HER activity also increased with higher Ni content. Different analysis methods revealed the effects of surface area and activity on overall measured HER activity, emphasizing the importance of ECSA.

Pyridinic- and Pyrrolic Nitrogen in Pyrogenic Carbon Improves Electron Shuttling during Microbial Fe(III) Reduction

Song Wu et al.

Summary: The study found that N functionalities were present in 10 different types of biomass-derived pyrogenic carbons, dominated by heterocyclic pyridinic-N and pyrrolic-N species. Statistical analyses revealed a positive correlation between pyridinic-N and pyrrolic-N contents and ferrihydrite reduction rate, indicating their significant contribution to enhanced Fe(III) reduction. Experimental observations and density functional theory calculations demonstrated that heterocyclic N structures showed higher electron shuttling efficiency compared to the quinone group, improving electron transfer rate in pyrogenic carbon.
