Effect of Ni on electrical properties of Ba(Zr,Ce,Y)O3-δ as electrolyte for protonic ceramic fuel cells

Yuanye Huang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of NiO addition on the electrochemical properties of Ba1.015Zr0.664Ce0.20Y0.136O3-delta. It is found that the apparent grain-boundary conductivity of the ceramic material significantly increases with the addition of 0.125-1.0 wt% NiO, mainly due to the increased grain size. However, the bulk conductivity decreases with higher NiO addition, resulting from decreased proton uptake and mobility. The presence of Ce3+ and the variability of cation composition in the grain boundary region are also observed.

Summary: In this study, the electrochemical and transport properties of a perovskite-type proton conductor BZCYYb5311 were evaluated. The material showed high proton conductivity and exceptional chemical stability. It exhibited a proton conductivity of 98% compared to ionic conductivity at 600°C. The maximum power density in fuel cell mode and current density in electrolysis mode were calculated, indicating the potential of BZCYYb5311 as a fuel cell material.

Recent progress in barium zirconate proton conductors for electrochemical hydrogen device applications: A review

M. Khalid Hossain et al.

Summary: Doped BaZrO3 is a solid ion-conducting material with excellent proton conduction properties for electrolyte applications in electrochemical hydrogen devices operating in the intermediate temperature range of 400-650 degrees C. Enhanced proton transport properties and material fabrication processes of BZO can be achieved through the use of dopants, sintering aid, and various synthesis methods. The review highlights the applications of BZO in various electrochemical hydrogen devices and provides insights into the impact of different factors on the performance of BZO electrolyte materials.

Effects of NiO addition on sintering and proton uptake of Ba(Zr,Ce,Y)O3-δ

Yuanye Huang et al.

Summary: The effects of adding 0.125-2.0 wt% NiO as a sintering aid for highly refractory Ba(Zr,Ce,Y)O3-delta proton conducting ceramics were investigated. The addition of NiO led to changes in phase evolution, densification kinetics, and proton uptake, with a NiO content of 0.4-0.5 wt% suggested as a balance between the benefits and drawbacks.
