DIET-like mutualism of Geobacter and methanogens at specific electrode potential boosts production of both methane and hydrogen from propionate

Yuqing Yan et al.

Summary: In this study, DIET-like mutualism between Geobacter and methanogens was discovered in the planktonic microbiome of anaerobic electrochemical digestion fed with propionate. Excessive cathodic hydrogen triggered this mutualistic interaction, resulting in concurrent methane and hydrogen production. The presence of Geobacter and extracellular electron transfer genes without external conductive materials highlights the potentially ubiquitous nature of DIET-like mutualism.

Anaerobic digestion of sludge by different pretreatments: Changes of amino acids and microbial community

Keke Xiao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the changes in dissolved organic nitrogen and the transformation of proteins and amino acids during anaerobic digestion of sludge treated with different pretreatments. The results showed that cysteine is an important component responsible for methane production and is resistant to degradation. The study also found that the metabolism of cysteine and methionine is absent in all sludge samples. Cysteine contributes to methane generation and the degradation of organic acids through its effect on oxidation-reduction potential and biomass activity.

Enhanced methane production during long-term UASB operation at high organic loads as enabled by the immobilized Fungi

Qiong Guo et al.

Summary: This study proposes a new strategy to stabilize anaerobic digestion at high organic loading rates (OLR) using Aspergillus sydowii 8L-9-F02 immobilized beads (AEBs). The results show that the reactor with AEBs achieves higher COD removal and methane production compared to the control reactor without AEBs. The presence of AEBs inhibits volatile fatty acids accumulation, stabilizes pH, promotes the production of extracellular polymeric substances, and enhances sludge granulation and settleability. Additionally, AEBs favor the enrichment of methanogenic archaea and improve the efficiency of methanogenic pathways.

Novel Long-Chain Fatty Acid (LCFA)-Degrading Bacteria and Pathways in Anaerobic Digestion Promoted by Hydrochar as Revealed by Genome-Centric Metatranscriptomics Analysis

Meichen Sun et al.

Summary: This study found that hydrochar effectively promoted the anaerobic digestion of long-chain fatty acids (LCFA) and revealed new LCFA-degrading bacteria and a new metabolic pathway through genomic-centric metatranscriptomic analysis. The findings provide a new method for enhancing the degradation of organic wastes with high LCFA content in anaerobic digestion and increase the understanding of the microbes and metabolic pathways involved in LCFA degradation.

Acesulfame Anoxic Biodegradation Coupled to Nitrate Reduction by Enriched Consortia and Isolated Shinella spp.

Yue Huang et al.

Summary: This study found that ACE could be completely mineralized under enriched consortia coupled with nitrate reduction, and identified three novel ACE-degrading strains capable of degrading ACE under both aerobic and anoxic conditions. Plasmid-mediated ACE biodegradation was suspected, and a total of 83 near-complete metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) were obtained, suggesting Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes as the dominant phyla in ACE-degrading consortia.

Enhanced Methane Recovery from Waste-Activated Sludge by Alginate-Degrading Consortia: The Overlooked Role of Alginate in Extracellular Polymeric Substances

Fang Zhang et al.

Summary: The hydrolysis of alginate, a main component of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) in waste-activated sludge, is crucial for enhancing methane production. The alginate-degrading consortia (ADC) showed a significant increase in methane production and biological methane potential, indicating the importance of alginate in EPS for methane recovery. Future research should focus on investigating the microbial changes in ADC for stable digestion of waste-activated sludge.

Summary: Experimental results and model fitting showed that addition of granular activated carbon (GAC) supports faster methane production, decreases lag-phase, and accelerates consumption of volatile fatty acid and long-chain fatty acid. However, there is a decrease in maximum methane production when GAC concentration exceeds 8.0 g/L.

Effect of Growth Conditions on Biosurfactant Production by Pseudomonas balearica Isolated from Oil Contaminated Sea Waters from Jeddah Saudi Arabia

Ebtihal A. Motwali et al.

Summary: This study investigated the biosurfactant produced by P. balearica isolated from oil-contaminated sea water to determine optimal production conditions. Olive oil and urea were found to be the best carbon and nitrogen sources, with pH 7, inoculum size 2%, incubation temperature 30℃, and 312 hours of incubation period yielding the highest biosurfactant production. The biosurfactant reduced water surface tension from 72 to 34 mN/m, demonstrating potential for use in oil hydrolysis.
