Selective Recovery of Gold from Electronic Waste by New Efficient Type of Sorbent

Grzegorz Wojcik et al.

Summary: Modular connectors containing gold and copper are used by computer users. A method to selectively remove trace amounts of gold(III) from hydrochloric acid solutions using sorbents is presented. Gold(III) ions were effectively recovered from the digested modular connector using Purolite MN 202. The highest sorption capacity of gold(III) ions was obtained using Purolite MN 202 after impregnation with Cyanex 272.

Zareen Zuhra et al.

Summary: Designing materials for selective recovery of precious metals is critical in response to the economic and environmental concerns caused by electronic waste outbreaks. In this study, high-performance hybrid materials (MCNTs) based on hexaaminobenzene metal-organic framework (HAB-MOF) and carbon nano-tube (CNT) sponge were introduced for selective recovery of Au(III) and Pd(II). The synthesized 30-MCNT demonstrated the highest adsorption capacity for Au(III) and Pd(II) among all reported MOFs, making it a benchmark material in the MOF family. The material showed high selectivity and excellent recovery and recycling properties, making it a potential candidate for industrial applications in precious metal recovery.

Youngkyun Jung et al.

Summary: This study successfully achieved the highly selective and efficient recovery of gold from electronic waste using a novel cage-like amine-rich polymeric capsule (APC). The APC structure allowed the gold ions to penetrate and be reduced to nanocrystals, while also preventing the release of these nanocrystals and clogging of the pore channels. The APC adsorbent achieved a gold recovery ratio of ~99%.

Modification assisted Cu2O/MCM-41 nanoarchitecture toward efficient recovery of Au (III)

Chaopeng Liu et al.

Summary: A Cu2O and thiourea functionalized MCM-41 (CMTU) nanoarchitecture was prepared for selectively recovering Au (III) from an acidic solution. The material achieved this through electrostatic attraction and chelation, resulting in the binding of Au (III) to the CMTU surface. Cu (I) then readily reduced Au (III) to Au (I) and Au (0). This material displayed excellent adsorption capacity, followed specific models for adsorption, and exhibited a spontaneously endothermic recovery process, as well as high selectivity and reusability.

Bottom-up synthesis of cationic porphyrin-based porous organic polymers for highly efficient and selective recovery of gold

Rui Ding et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel porous organic polymer material, Imi-PPOPs-Br, was developed and showed excellent adsorption capacity, reusability, and selectivity for Au (III) in extracting gold from electronic waste. The adsorption mechanism was found to be due to the electrostatic interaction, strong binding of Au and N active sites, and reductive immobilization of Au (III) to Au (0). This study provides a new and facile strategy for constructing stable absorbents in environmental applications.

Enhanced adsorption of Congo red using chitin suspension after sonoenzymolysis

Furong Hou et al.

Summary: Chitin suspensions treated with enzymolysis and sonoenzymolysis showed improved adsorption properties for Congo red dyes, with Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second order model being more reliable in describing the adsorption process. Thermodynamic studies indicated a spontaneous adsorption process, with physical adsorption between chitin and CR confirmed through structural characterization before and after adsorption. Sonoenzymolysis resulted in a larger specific surface area and higher porosity, providing more active sites for adsorption.

Mechanism of selective gold adsorption on ion-imprinted chitosan resin modified by thiourea

Junkang Guo et al.

Summary: Thiourea-modified chitosan-imprinted resin (IM-TUCS) exhibited higher gold adsorption capacity and specific recognition capabilities for Au(III) compared to nonimprinted resin (NIM-TUCS). Protonation of the amino group on the resin under low pH conditions promoted Au(III) adsorption, while the cross-linking structure provided holes that could hold Au(III). The IM-TUCS showed high potential economic value with a gold recovery rate of approximately 93% after reuse for four cycles.

Chitosan modifications for adsorption of pollutants-A review

Ismaila Olalekan Saheed et al.

Summary: Modification of chitosan through methods such as grafting and cross-linking is a promising approach for removing organic and inorganic pollutants from aqueous medium. The performance of modified chitosan for adsorption of pollutants depends largely on the modification method adopted, materials used, and adsorption experimental conditions. Cross-linking is commonly used for improving the stability of chitosan, although it may decrease adsorption capacity, but recent works have shown enhancement through grafting or incorporation of solid adsorbents before cross-linking.

Adsorption behaviors of Au(III) onto humic acid extracted from gold ore: Adsorptive kinetics, isotherm and mechanismy

Huiqun Niu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the adsorption characteristics of humic acid extracted from refractory carbon-containing gold concentrate, establishing adsorption kinetic and isotherm models. Various analytical methods were used to analyze the gold-adsorbing process. Results demonstrated that the adsorption behavior of the extracted humic acid for gold followed pseudo-second-order kinetics and Freundlich model, indicating a spontaneous and endothermic process. Furthermore, the thermodynamic study showed an increase in isosteric heat of adsorption with higher adsorption amount, suggesting a chemisorption-driven process with complexation between Au (III) and functional groups.
