Nitrogen-defect induced trap states steering electron-hole migration in graphite carbon nitride

Wenlu Li et al.

Summary: Defect structures of semiconductors play a crucial role in regulating trap states, excitons, and active charge carriers in artificial photosynthesis systems. By preparing a g-C3N4 system with abundant nitrogen defects, researchers discovered a 20-fold increase in H-2 evolution efficiency under visible light irradiation compared to bulk g-C3N4. Further investigation using femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy revealed that shallow trap states induced by N defects can capture photogenerated electrons, inhibiting deep trapping and direct recombination of photogenerated charges. These findings provide new insights for manipulating trap state depth and photocatalytic processes through N defects, leading to high photocatalytic performance.
