Separation characters of an axial-flow hydrocyclone with oil collecting pipe

Rongcheng Mao et al.

Summary: Based on experiment and numerical simulation, a new type of efficient oil-water separator with high separation accuracy was constructed in this study by adding oil collecting pipe. Experimental results showed that, in the treatment of 10% oil mixture, when the inlet flow rate was 0.5 m/s, the volume fraction of oil at the oil outlet could reach 45%, and the volume fraction of oil at the water outlet could be reduced to 0.0724%. The novel separator exhibits great potential in oil fields with high water content or offshore platforms according to the laboratory-scale tests.

Role of hydrocyclone separator on the formation and separation of aerobic granular sludge: Evaluating granulation efficiency and simulating hydrodynamic behavior

Du Guo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the application of a hydrocyclone separator in the field of aerobic granular sludge (AGS). The granulating and granular separation efficiencies of the hydrocyclone separator were studied through experiments and simulations. The results showed that the hydrocyclone separator significantly reduced the suspended sludge in the mixed liquid, improved sludge settling performance, and reduced SVI. The optimal granular separation efficiency was achieved at a specific water velocity. Additionally, the use of carrier particles with larger particle size was suggested to enhance AGS formation.

A machine learning framework to improve effluent quality control in wastewater treatment plants

Dong Wang et al.

Summary: This paper presents a novel ML-based framework designed to improve effluent quality control in WWTPs by clarifying the relationships between operational variables and effluent parameters. The study shows that influent temperature has a significant impact on TSSe and PO4(e), but in different ways; PO4(e) strongly depends on the TSS concentration in aeration basins, and the impact of TSS in aeration basins on effluent parameters increases with the distances of the basin from the merging outlet; Returning excessive amounts of sludge through the second return sludge pipe should be avoided due to its adverse impact on effluent quality.
