Discovery and quantification of plastic particle pollution in human blood

Heather A. Leslie et al.

Summary: Plastic particles are widespread pollutants in the environment and food chain, and this study successfully developed a method to measure the presence of plastic particles in human blood. The study found four high production volume polymers in blood samples and demonstrated that plastic particles can be taken up by the human bloodstream.

Consequences of nano and microplastic exposure in rodent models: the known and unknown

Walison Augusto da Silva Brito et al.

Summary: The ubiquitous presence of micro- and nanoplastics has become a growing environmental concern, with the potential impact on human health remaining uncertain. Research has focused on rodent models to understand the effects of exposure to individual plastic polymers, and data has shown that the effects depend on various factors such as particle size, polymer, shape, charge, concentration, and exposure routes. Rodents exposed to micro- and nanoplastics exhibit local inflammation, oxidative stress, and metabolic disruption, leading to gastrointestinal toxicity, hepatotoxicity, reproduction disorders, and neurotoxic effects.

A Novel Impedimetric Sensor Based on Cyanobacterial Extracellular Polymeric Substances for Microplastics Detection

Wejdene Gongi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the application of cyanobacterial extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) as a sensor coating material for microplastic detection. The EPS-based sensor deposited on a gold electrode was analyzed using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Surface properties of the sensor were examined using various techniques, including scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray spectroscopy. The results show that the EPS-based sensor has a high homogenous structure and can detect low concentrations of four types of microplastics.

Sensitive and specific capture of polystyrene and polypropylene microplastics using engineered peptide biosensors

Hyunjeong Woo et al.

Summary: Due to increased environmental pollution, research on microplastics circulating in the ocean has attracted significant interest. A new method using peptides for the rapid detection of microplastics was proposed in this study. The binding affinity of hydrophobic peptides for different types of plastics was evaluated. The detection of microplastics in small animals' intestine extracts was successfully achieved using peptide biosensors. Plastic-binding peptides are expected to be used in sensors to enhance the detection efficiency of microplastics and aid in separating microplastics from seawater.

Sampling, pre-treatment, and identification methods of microplastics in sewage sludge and their effects in agricultural soils: a review

Pelin Koyuncuoglu et al.

Summary: Microplastics are widely detected in wastewater treatment plants and can be efficiently removed from wastewaters, but they accumulate in sewage sludge. Studies on quantifying and identifying microplastics in sewage sludge are limited and require further investigation. The economic use of treated sewage sludge for soil amendment creates a pathway for microplastics entering the soil environment, potentially harming soil safety and organisms.

Raman Spectroscopy for the Analysis of Microplastics in Aquatic Systems

Veronica Nava et al.

Summary: Raman spectroscopy is increasingly being used in the analysis of microplastics, particularly in aquatic systems. This technique offers high spatial resolution for investigating small plastic particles, but faces challenges such as fluorescence interference and weathered polymers. Understanding plastic polymers and their Raman peaks is crucial to avoid misidentification, and resources such as the RamanMP package with a database of spectra can aid in improving the use of this technique for microplastic analysis.
