In Situ Synthesis of Nanorod Arrays of Nickel-Molybdenum Nitrides as Stable Electrocatalysts for Hydrogen Evolution Reactions

Liuyu Jia et al.

Summary: In this work, NiMoN nanorod arrays were synthesized in situ on a nickel foam substrate through a two-step method involving hydrothermal and nitridation reactions, resulting in abundant active sites and fast electron transfer rate. The optimized Ni/Mo ratio led to a high concentration of active Mo3+ species and suitable Ni doping content, leading to superior hydrogen evolution reaction performance. The overpotentials at current densities of 10 and 100 mA/cm2 were only 20 and 46 mV, outperforming most reported NiMoN-based catalysts and even the commercial benchmark material of Pt/C. Additionally, the electrocatalyst exhibited excellent long-term stability after 24-hour tests at densities of 10 and 100 mA/cm2, showing great potential for industrial applications in water splitting for hydrogen production.

Artificial heterointerfaces of defect-rich Ni and amorphous/crystalline MoN enable efficient hydrogen evolution reaction

Wei Peng et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel metallic heterostructure composed of defect-rich nickel and amorphous/crystalline molybdenum nitride anchored on a carbon matrix (MoN/Ni@C) was fabricated and demonstrated as a superior electrocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The MoN/Ni@C electrocatalyst exhibited low HER overpotential and small Tafel slope, along with excellent stability in alkaline solution. Density functional theory calculations revealed that the interfacial electron transfer contributed to the distortion of Ni surface and the optimal thermoneutral hydrogen adsorption free energies on Mo and Ni active sites. The amorphous/crystalline structure in the MoN phase provided more active sites and promoted structural stability. This work provides new insights into designing non-noble-metal-based electrocatalysts with superior HER activities.
