Ultrasound-activated peracetic acid to degrade tetracycline hydrochloride: Efficiency and mechanism

Keyu Yao et al.

Summary: The efficiency and mechanism of ultrasound-activated peracetic acid (US/PAA) in removing tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) were investigated in this study. The results showed that the US/PAA process successfully removed organic contaminants from water, achieving a degradation efficiency of 99.4% for TCH within 30 minutes. The addition of ultrasonic radiation effectively activated PAA and significantly increased the degradation efficiency of TCH compared to the PAA process. Singlet oxygen and organic radicals played a crucial role in the degradation of TCH during the US/PAA process, as demonstrated by electron paramagnetic resonance and radical quenching experiments.

Constant oxidation of atrazine in Fe(III)/PDS system by enhancing Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle with quinones: Reaction mechanism, degradation pathway and DFT calculation

Yujiao An et al.

Summary: Quinones such as methyl-p-benzoquinone (MBQ) are widely distributed potential pollutants in the environment. This study introduced MBQ into the Fe(III)/peroxydisulfate system (Fe(III)/PDS) to enhance the conversion of Fe(III) to Fe(II) and the degradation of atrazine (ATZ), establishing an environmentally friendly system for treating pollution. The MBQ/Fe(III)/PDS system showed better performance than the traditional Fe(II)/PDS system within a pH range of 2-7. Sulfate radical (SO4 center dot-) and hydroxyl radical ((OH)-O-center dot) were detected in the MBQ/Fe(III)/PDS system, indicating their involvement in the degradation process.

Adsorptive removal of sulfonamides, tetracyclines and quinolones from wastewater and water using carbon-based materials: Recent developments and future directions

Basanta Kumar Biswal et al.

Summary: This review critically analyzes the use of carbon based materials (biochar and hydrochar) for removing antibiotics from wastewater and water. Biochar and hydrochar both show excellent performance for adsorptive removal of antibiotics, with hydrochar having a higher adsorption capacity than biochar for tetracyclines. The key mechanisms for antibiotic adsorption onto biochar/hydrochar surfaces include 7C-7C electron donor-acceptor interactions and H-bonding. Thermodynamics studies indicate that the sorption process is mostly spontaneous and endothermic. Overall, the use of biochar/hydrochar for removing antibiotics from water has significant potential from both economic and environmental perspectives.

Facile synthesis of oxygen vacancies enriched ZnFe2O4 for effective photocatalytic peroxodisulfate activation

Xinyu Wang et al.

Summary: Water pollution is a pressing global environmental issue that requires immediate attention. Visible light-assisted catalytic peroxodisulfate (PDS) activation is an efficient advanced oxidation technology that holds great potential for treating organic wastewater. In this study, defects were introduced in ZnFe2O4 to create abundant oxygen vacancies (ZFO(v)), which not only enhanced the photocatalytic degradation of TCH, but also improved the activation of magnetic nanoparticles by PDS. The results showed that the ZFO(v)/PDS/vis system achieved a degradation rate of about 65% for TCH within 30 minutes, which was 1.23 times higher than that of the ZFO/PDS/vis system. Moreover, the degradation rate remained over 58% even after three reuse cycles, with minimal leaching of zinc and iron. The effects of pH, PDS concentration, humic acid, anions, and cations on TCH degradation in the presence of the ZFO(v)/PDS/vis system were also investigated. Overall, this study demonstrates the potential of surface engineering and PDS activation for designing highly efficient photocatalysts.

Reconstructing the coordination environment of single atomic Fe-catalysts for boosting the Fenton-like degradation activities

Yuanzheng Zhang et al.

Summary: This study develops an advanced single-atomic iron-loaded graphitic carbon nitride (Fe-1/CN) with unparalleled efficiency for converting peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to oxidants for water treatment. Acid-etching of Fe-1/CN leads to the reconstruction of conventional Fe-1-N-4 to Fe-1-C2N1 active sites, which are more favorable for PMS binding and have a lower energy barrier for O-1(2) production. The acid-etched Fe-1/CN shows 29 times higher rate constants of bisphenol A degradation compared to its pristine counterparts. The particulate catalysts, assembled into a self-supported catalytic membrane, exhibit excellent long-term durability in flow-through tests.
