Controlling Li deposition below the interface

Wenzhuo Cao et al.

Summary: This paper examines the behaviors, mechanisms, and influencing factors of Li plating/stripping and proposes general strategies to control Li deposition. It is essential to have comprehensive design strategies for the electrode, electrolyte, and their interface. Three dimensional (3D) anodes and artificial interface engineering can reduce the risk of Li deposition, while electrolyte engineering favors Li transport and suppresses dendrites, serving as the final barrier to uncontrolled Li deposition.

A critical review on biochar-based engineered hierarchical porous carbon for capacitive charge storage

Dinh Viet Cuong et al.

Summary: Hierarchical porous carbon (HPC) has been traditionally fabricated by activated carbon, but biochar is now being explored as a renewable and more environmentally friendly alternative. Recent studies have shown that biochar-based HPC exhibits great potential in capacitive energy storage due to its unique properties. Research efforts have focused on developing biochar-based engineered hierarchical porous carbons (EHPCs) to enhance capacitive charge storage performance through techniques such as templating and doping. The review provides an overview of the applications of biochar-based HPC and EHPC in capacitive charge storage, such as capacitive deionization (CDI) and supercapacitors (SC), and offers future research directions in this field.

Balancing interfacial reactions to achieve long cycle life in high-energy lithium metal batteries

Summary: The study investigates the degradation mechanisms of Li || LiNi0.6Mn0.2Co0.2O2 pouch cells and shows that an optimal anode to cathode capacity ratio of 1:1 can balance well the rates of Li consumption, electrolyte depletion, and solid-electrolyte interphase construction to extend the cycle life of the cell. Contrary to conventional wisdom, long cycle life is observed with ultra-thin Li in balanced cells. A prototype 350 Wh kg(-1) pouch cell achieves over 600 stable cycles with 76% capacity retention.
