Enhanced visible-light degradation of organic dyes via porous g-C3N4

Sabarish Kumaravel et al.

Summary: In this study, graphitic carbon nitride and porous graphitic carbon nitride were successfully prepared by reducing melamine using a pyrolysis method. The enhanced photocatalytic degradation efficiency of porous graphitic carbon nitride was attributed to an increase in surface area, leading to a higher number of active sites for dye degradation. Reactive oxygen species experiments revealed that the generation of (.)OH radicals was responsible for the degradation of dyes.

Maximizing the utilization of photo-generated electrons and holes of g-C3N4 photocatalyst for harmful algae inactivation

Dongxu Wang et al.

Summary: The efficient inactivation of algae under visible light irradiation is achieved using sulfuric acid exfoliated C3N4. The positive surface charge and small sized/ultrathin structure of the photocatalyst contribute to the high performance. Addition of H2O2 further improves the efficiency by reducing carrier recombination and generating more ·OH. The inactivation process involves decreased photosynthetic activity, membrane damage, cell rupture, and partial removal of organic matters.

Methyl silicate promotes the oxidative degradation of bisphenol A by permanganate: Efficiency enhancement mechanism and solid-liquid separation characteristics

Jing Li et al.

Summary: This study used potassium methyl silicates (PMS) as surface modifiers to improve the aggregation of colloidal particles and enhance the oxidation of bisphenol A (BPA) by Mn (VII). PMS provided sufficient adsorption sites and reaction space, and formed hydrophobic PMS-MnO2 complexes which accelerated sedimentation. This method solved the low efficiency problem of Mn (VII) oxidation degradation and difficult separation of manganese containing colloids.

Interactions between tannins allelochemicals and extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) of Microcystis aeruginosa

Li Yin et al.

Summary: This study explores the protective mechanism of extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) secreted by harmful cyanobacteria against tannins allelochemicals. The results show that proteins in soluble EPS (SEPS) and bound EPS (BEPS) of Microcystis aeruginosa interact with tannic acid (TA) mainly through hydrophobic interactions. The amine, carbonyl, carboxyl, and hydroxyl groups in EPS are the functional groups contributing to the interaction with TA. The existence of EPS reduces the toxicity of TA to algal cells.

Bio-inspired nanostructured g-C3N4-based photocatalysts: A comprehensive review

Bo Lin et al.

Summary: Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) is a new type of organic conjugated semiconductor with adjustable electronic structure, outstanding thermal endurance, appealing chemical stability, low cost, and environmental friendliness, making it a fascinating material for various photocatalytic applications. However, unmodified bulk g-C3N4 has intrinsic limitations such as poor crystallinity, marginal visible-light harvesting, easy recombination of charge pairs, small surface area, and slow charge migration, resulting in low quantum efficiency of photocatalytic reactions. Manipulating the microstructures of g-C3N4 is an efficient strategy to overcome these shortcomings. Mimicking the structures of creatures in nature to design and construct bio-inspired structures is a promising approach to improve the photocatalytic performance of g-C3N4 and g-C3N4-based systems.

Summary: The interaction between EPS and Ag2O/g-C3N4 mainly includes adhesion to the surface through electrostatic force, reduction in surface zeta potential, increase in particle size, and inhibition of Ag+ release. Additionally, EPS can be degraded by Ag2O/g-C3N4, serving as protection for algae cells.

Hajer Ben Hlima et al.

Summary: A study combining in silico analysis and bioinformatic tools identified and characterized 14 putative lipases expressed by Chlorella vulgaris, with diverse molecular weights, subcellular localizations, and sequence similarities. These lipases share a similar core with common alpha/beta hydrolases fold and belong to family 3 lipases and class GX, with some predicted to have transmembrane domains and a lysosomal acid lipase identified. Further structural insights are needed for understanding their enzymatic characteristics.

C-, N-Vacancy defect engineered polymeric carbon nitride towards photocatalysis: viewpoints and challenges

Abhinandan Kumar et al.

Summary: Graphite-like carbon nitride (g-C3N4; GCN) is a metal-free polymeric semiconductor material with fascinating physicochemical and photoelectronic structural features, yet its wide-range applicability is limited by inherent drawbacks such as rapid reassembly of photocarriers and low specific surface area. Introducing vacancies into the framework of GCN to generate 0D point defects has shown potential in manipulating optical absorption, radiative carrier isolation, and surface photoreactions. Various advanced strategies for controlled designing of vacancy-rich GCN have been explored, highlighting the significance of defect engineering on optical absorption, charge isolation, and surface photoreaction ability in GCN. Applications of defect engineered GCN include photocatalytic water splitting, CO2 conversion, N-2 fixation, pollutant degradation, and H2O2 production.
