Identifying the mediators of intracellular E. coli inactivation under UVA light: The (photo) Fenton process and singlet oxygen

Stefanos Giannakis et al.

Summary: This study investigates the underlying mechanism of solar disinfection (SODIS). The results show that UVA exposure leads to intracellular H2O2 formation, which is responsible for cell death. UVA also inactivates enzymes and suppresses metabolism, enhancing the stress of H2O2 and its killing effect on cells.

Superior visible light-mediated catalytic activity of a novel N-doped, Fe3O4-incorporating MgO nanosheet in presence of PMS: Imidacloprid degradation and implications on simultaneous bacterial inactivation

Somaye Akbari et al.

Summary: Impressive degradation of Imidacloprid (IMD) and bacterial inactivation were achieved through visible light photocatalysis using N-doped MgO@Fe3O4. The study demonstrated that N-MgO@Fe3O4 exhibited excellent catalytic performance and generated various reactive species that played a key role in IMD degradation. Additionally, the catalyst showed good stability, negligible leaching and notable separability, making it a potential candidate for the treatment of contaminated waters.

Deriving an α-Fe2O3/g-C3N4 nanocomposite from a naturally hematite-rich soil, for dual photocatalytic and photo-Fenton degradation of Acetaminophen under visible light

Mona Kohantorabi et al.

Summary: This study reports a facile synthesis route for the fabrication of an alpha-Fe2O3@g-C3N4 photocatalyst derived from a hematite-rich soil. The FeCN-0.5 catalyst shows the best catalytic performance in Acetaminophen degradation under visible light irradiation, thanks to the Z-scheme structure formation between alpha-Fe2O3 and g-C3N4 that enhances light absorption and charge carrier generation. The study provides new insights into the fabrication of novel materials derived from natural sources for use in advanced oxidation processes.

Mechanistic modelling of wastewater disinfection by the photo-Fenton process at circumneutral pH

Cintia Casado et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the mechanistic modelling of wastewater disinfection using controlled solar simulated radiation in the solar photoFenton process for the first time. It was found that iron precipitates forming hydroxides at circumneutral pH significantly affect the optical properties of water, and a mechanism for bacterial inactivation was proposed.

New notion of biochar: A review on the mechanism of biochar applications in advannced oxidation processes

Xuerong Zhou et al.

Summary: Biochar, as an economical carbonaceous material, has emerged as an alternative candidate in catalysis field. Functional structures on biochar, such as oxygen-containing groups, defects, and persistent free radicals, have been identified as active sites in heterogeneous catalytic systems. Loaded metal components and doped heteroatoms can also act as active sites in the catalysis system.

Evaluation of B-ZnO on photocatalytic inactivation of Escherichia coli and Enterococcus sp

Raisa Estefania Nunez-Salas et al.

Summary: This study compared the photocatalytic inactivation of E. coli and Enterococcus sp. strains using boron-doped ZnO (B-ZnO) with ZnO and TiO2. Under darkness, B-ZnO showed better performance, while under solar simulated irradiation, all three materials exhibited significant disinfection effects. The desirability function confirmed B-ZnO as the best material with enhanced photocatalytic antimicrobial activity against both strains.
