Enhancement of bioaromatics production from food waste through catalytic pyrolysis over Zn and Mo-loaded HZSM-5 under an environment of decomposed methane

Surendar Moogi et al.

Summary: In this study, the catalytic effects of Zn and Mo-loaded HZSM-5 on the pyrolysis of food waste under a hydrogen-rich atmosphere derived from catalytic methane decomposition were investigated. It was found that the methane decomposition medium led to a higher yield of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes compared to a typical nitrogen pyrolysis medium. Among all the catalysts tested, the bimetallic Zn-Mo/HZSM-5 catalyst showed the highest yield, which can be attributed to its high acidity and the hydrogen-rich environment.

Simultaneous Upcycling of Biodegradable Plastic and Sea Shell Wastes Through Thermocatalytic Monomer Recovery

Seonho Lee et al.

Summary: This study proposes a method of upcycling biodegradable plastic waste and marine waste using a catalyst derived from sea shell waste. The catalyst effectively recovers lactic acid from biodegradable straws through thermocatalytic conversion. However, coke deposition is a major deactivation pathway of the catalyst during the conversion process.

Recovery of lactic acid from biodegradable straw waste through a CO2-assisted thermochemical process

Soosan Kim et al.

Summary: Although widely used, biodegradable straws cannot be disposed of in open environments or recycled like conventional plastic straws. This study explores the thermochemical conversion of biodegradable straws made of polylactic acid (PLA) and the effects of CO2 on the resulting products. The results show that the thermochemical conversion in a CO2 atmosphere produces more non-condensable gases and lactic acid, while suppressing the formation of harmful substances.

Marine waste upcycling-recovery of nylon monomers from fishing net waste using seashell waste-derived catalysts in a CO2-mediated thermocatalytic process

Soosan Kim et al.

Summary: This study aims to recover caprolactam from fishing net waste using seashell waste-derived catalytic materials in a thermocatalytic process. The use of SSWC-CO2 as a catalyst under a CO2 atmosphere maximizes the caprolactam recovery. The findings provide insights into developing a new thermocatalytic upcycling process for marine waste and increasing economic potential.

Upcycling of waste teabags via catalytic pyrolysis in carbon dioxide over HZSM-11

Soosan Kim et al.

Summary: The study explores the effects of CO2 and HZSM-11 catalyst on the pyrolytic products of waste teabags, showing that their synergistic use enhances the production of caprolactam, a value-added nylon monomer. The conversion of CO2 into CO during catalytic pyrolysis was greater compared to non-catalytic pyrolysis, highlighting the potential of upcycling everyday waste such as waste teabags through the synergistic employment of HZSM-11 catalyst and CO2 pyrolysis medium.
