Microalgal mediated antibiotic co-metabolism: Kinetics, transformation products and pathways

Claude Kiki et al.

Summary: This study investigated the interaction between Chlorella vulgaris microalgae and four antibiotics. The results showed that the mixture of antibiotics inhibited algal growth, but had higher removal efficiency compared to single antibiotics. The study also found that C. vulgaris has the potential to be used in antibiotic removal.

Machine learning-based investigation of the relationship between gut microbiome and obesity status

Wanjun Liu et al.

Summary: This study collected and analyzed fecal samples and phenotype information from 2262 Chinese individuals, and found that obese individuals have lower species diversity and higher diversity of metabolic pathways compared to normal-weight individuals. In addition, three potential obesity-related biomarkers were identified. These findings demonstrate a close relationship between obesity and gut microbiota in the Chinese population.

Antibiotic removal potential for low greenhouse gas emission process of anaerobic digestion (AD) producing volatile fatty acids (VFAs)

Fubin Yin et al.

Summary: This study investigated the reduction of sulfachloropyridazine (SCP) and its effects on volatile fatty acids (VFAs) accumulation and microbial community structures during anaerobic digestion (AD) producing VFAs. The results showed a positive correlation between initial SCP concentrations and reduction of SCP and accumulation of VFAs. SCP altered bacterial composition by promoting growth of specific bacterial taxa, but did not increase bacterial alpha-diversity.

Developing a solar photothermal method for peroxydisulfate activation for water purification: Taking degradation of sulfamethoxazole as an example

Han-Chao Zhang et al.

Summary: The study developed a novel photothermal method to activate peroxydisulfate (PDS) for degrading sulfamethoxazole in water purification. Using carbon black as the photothermal conversion agent enhanced the activation of PDS under simulated sunlight, resulting in significantly faster degradation of sulfamethoxazole compared to traditional solar irradiation activation.

Ability of anaerobic digestion to remove antibiotics contained in swine manure

Fubin Yin et al.

Summary: The study found that anaerobic digestion can completely eliminate certain antibiotics in swine manure under certain conditions, while the presence of certain antibiotics can also affect methane production. The modified Gompertz model, applicable to different antibiotic loads, performed well and showed a strong correlation between antibiotic reduction and methane production for certain antibiotics.

Electricity from anaerobic methane oxidation by a single methanogenic archaeon Methanosarcina barkeri

Linpeng Yu et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the electricity generation using Anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) driven by the single methanogen Methanosarcina barkeri, revealing its electrogenic mechanism. The findings suggest that M. barkeri can directly donate electrons to electrodes and secrete redox-active compounds to facilitate indirect extracellular electron transfer (EET).

Catalytic oxidation of sulfachloropyridazine by MnO2: Effects of crystalline phase and peroxide oxidants

Jianchao Ma et al.

Summary: The catalytic activation of different oxidants by MnO2 for degradation of SCP was investigated, with different crystalline phases of MnO2 showing varying effects on the catalytic ozonation of SCP. The study found that O-1(2) and ·OH were more significant for SCP degradation, with their contributions to the catalytic ozonation of SCP being 63.16% and 28.07%, respectively. The study also highlighted the importance of oxygen vacancies, specific surface area, and exposure of MnO6 edges in facilitating the activation of O-3 for O-1(2) and ·OH productions and SCP degradation.

Role of microbubbles coupling fibrous-bed bioreactor in butyric acid production by Clostridium tyrobutyricum using Brewer's spent grain as feedstock

Linqi Zhao et al.

Summary: Microbubbles coupling fermentation technology improved oxygen transfer to aerobic microorganisms, but its effect on anaerobic Clostridium tyrobutyricum had not been reported. Evaluation showed that using microbubbles coupling fibrous-bed bioreactor (MBFBB) led to shorter fermentation time and higher butyrate productivity compared to conventional fibrous-bed bioreactor (FBB). The long-term stability and reliability for butyrate production using brewer's spent grain (BSG) were achieved in ten cycle process.
