A novel organic/inorganic S-scheme heterostructure of TCPP/Bi12O17Cl2 for boosting photodegradation of tetracycline hydrochloride: Kinetic, degradation mechanism, and toxic assessment

Chunchun Wang et al.

Summary: This study presents a visible-light-driven organic-inorganic S-scheme heterostructure photocatalyst with excellent performance in removing antibiotics from wastewater. By anchoring TCPP on the surface of Bi12O17Cl2, the S-scheme junction between TCPP and Bi12O17Cl2 was created, enhancing the visible-light response and accelerating the disintegration and conservation of photo-carriers. The resulting TCPP/Bi12O17Cl2 showed significantly improved photocatalytic activity and stability compared to Bi12O17Cl2. Through scavenging tests, LC-MS analysis, and toxicity calculation, the reactive radicals, degradation pathway, and eco-toxicity were elucidated. This research demonstrates the potential practicality of porphyrin-based S-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts for efficient antibiotic removal.

S-scheme MIL-101(Fe) octahedrons modified Bi2WO6 microspheres for photocatalytic decontamination of Cr(VI) and tetracycline hydrochloride: Synergistic insights, reaction pathways, and toxicity analysis

Shijie Li et al.

Summary: Solar-driven elimination of refractory contaminants is an ideal approach for environmental remediation. However, the photocatalytic performance of photocatalysts is limited by insufficient reactive sites and fast recombination of electrons and holes. In this study, a novel metal-organic framework-based heterostructure of MIL-101(Fe)/Bi2WO6 was synthesized, which exhibited significantly enhanced photoactivity for Cr(VI) reduction and tetracycline hydrochloride oxidation compared to individual Bi2WO6 and MIL-101(Fe). The improved catalytic performance can be attributed to the enlarged surface area and pollutant adsorption facilitated by MIL-101(Fe), as well as the efficient photo-carrier transport mechanism supported by oxygen vacancies.

Summary: This investigation analyzed publications on photocatalytic degradation of pollutants in aqueous solution using composite materials synthesized with biomass and TiO2 and/or ZnO semiconductors. After applying eligibility criteria, a total of 107 studies with 832 observations/entries were analyzed. The average removal efficiency and degradation kinetic rate for all pollutants and composite photocatalysts were 77.5 +/- 21.5% and 0.064 +/- 0.174 min(-1), respectively. Principal component analysis revealed the importance of synthesis methods, experimental conditions, and composite characteristics in relation to removal efficiency and photodegradation kinetics. Adsorption processes were found to be relevant for pollutant removal efficiency. Specific surface area and narrow band gap were identified as key characteristics for effective photocatalysis.

Long-term phosphorus sorption and leaching in sand filters for onsite treatment systems

Rajabu Hamisi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the leaching of phosphorus in sand soil when exposed to different wastewater characteristics and hydraulic loading modes. The results showed that sand soils have different capacities for adsorption and desorption of various substances depending on the influent wastewater, loading rate, and operation time. The sand columns showed high risks of phosphorus leaching when loaded with actual wastewater from septic tanks and biofiltration tanks. The modeling results suggested that reducing the loading rate could increase phosphorus removal efficiency and prolong the operational lifetime.

Nutrient pollution and its remediation using constructed wetlands: Insights into removal and recovery mechanisms, modifications and sustainable aspects

Tuhin Kamilya et al.

Summary: Constructed wetlands (CWs) are effective processes for the removal and recovery of nitrogen and phosphorus from nutrient-rich wastewater. Vertical flow CWs are more efficient in removing phosphorus, while horizontal flow CWs are more efficient in removing nitrogen. The performance of CWs can be significantly improved through the introduction of artificial aeration, external carbon sources, variation of plant species and substrate, and bioaugmentation. Hybrid CWs can achieve enhanced total nitrogen removal and recovery, but have little effect on phosphorus removal. Recommendations include incorporating hydrochar and oyster shells as substrate modifications, as well as providing suitable pre-treatment methods.
