Axial g-C3N4 coordinated iron(III) phthalocyanine mediated ultra-efficient peroxymonosulfate activation for high-valent iron species generation

Yan Ding et al.

Summary: In this study, a new axial g-C3N4 coordinated iron(III) phthalocyanine (FeP/CN) catalyst was successfully synthesized for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. The catalyst exhibited high efficiency in degrading various pollutants, and the main reactive species was identified as high-valent iron-oxo species (FeIV=O). The axial g-C3N4 ligand played a crucial role in generating FeIV=O species and increasing their reactivity, while reducing the demetalization rate of the catalyst.

Enhanced elimination of V 5+ in wastewater using zero-valent iron activated by ball milling: The overlooked crucial roles of energy input and sodium chloride

Peng Wang et al.

Summary: Ball-milling technology is an efficient and cost-effective method for enhancing the decontamination efficiency of zero-valent iron (ZVI). This study investigated the effects and mechanisms of pH, process control agents, and main process parameters on the removal of V5+ using ball-milled ZVI. The results revealed the successful activation of ZVI through mechanochemical action and the significant enhancement in V5+ elimination by ZVIbm under near-neutral conditions. The introduction of NaCl in the ball milling process alleviated agglomeration and improved the activity of ZVIbm. Excessive energy input, however, weakened the reactivity of ZVIbm on V5+ elimination. The results provided valuable insights into the remediation of vanadium-containing wastewater using ZVIbm.

The synergy of sulfur vacancies and heterostructure on CoS@FeS nanosheets for boosting the peroxymonosulfate activation

Liyuan Wu et al.

Summary: The incorporation of heterostructure and vacancies in the CoS@FeS catalyst synergistically triggers peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation, leading to the efficient degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) through a non-radical/radical oxidized pathway. Sulfur vacancies (SVs) facilitate the adsorption of PMS and dissolved oxygen (DO) on the catalyst surface, while the heterostructure enhances the charge transfer efficiency. The integration of SVs with heterostructure reduces the adsorption energy of PMS on the catalyst interface and improves the charge transfer efficiency for PMS activation.

Exploring mechanisms of different active species formation in heterogeneous Fenton systems by regulating iron chemical environment

Yue Yin et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of electron-donating and electron-withdrawing groups on the formation of active species in Fenton-like processes by preparing MOFs with different substituents. It is found that electron-donating groups promote HO center dot generation, while electron-withdrawing groups lead to the formation of Fe(IV)--O transition products. The manipulation of substituents on MOFs ligands provides mechanistic insight into active species regulation during Fenton-like processes.

Efficient degradation of carbamazepine by electro-Fenton system without any extra oxidant in the presence of molybdate: The role of slow release of iron ions

Jiayi Li et al.

Summary: The efficiency of carbamazepine removal was significantly improved in an electro-Fenton system with the presence of sodium molybdate, which reduced iron sludge generation and promoted iron ion utilization. The slow release of iron ions in the system led to a much higher removal rate compared to sole electrolysis or other systems, with superoxide radical identified as the primary reactive species. This work elucidated the mechanism by which slow release of iron ions enhances pollutant degradation.

Ascorbate guided conversion of hydrogen peroxide to hydroxyl radical on goethite

Xiaobing Wang et al.

Summary: The addition of ascorbate reduces the conversion of H2O2 to O-2 and increases the conversion to (OH)-O-center dot on goethite. This is due to the efficient Fe(III)/Fe(II) redox cycle accelerated by ascorbate, resulting in abundant Fe(II) on the goethite surface favoring the conversion of H2O2 to (OH)-O-center dot. Meanwhile, decreased surface Fe(III) inhibits the conversion of H2O2 to O-2.
