Zinc and magnesium catalysts for the synthesis for PLA and its degradation: Clues for catalyst design

Federica Santulli et al.

Summary: Homoleptic and heteroleptic zinc and magnesium complexes with phenoxy-imine pyridine ligands were synthesized and characterized. Various structural parameters were investigated to identify design elements for improving catalytic activity in the ring opening polymerization of lactide and the degradation reaction of polylactide. Zinc catalysts exhibited high efficiency and control degree, while magnesium catalysts showed lower activity and weaker control degree. The most active complexes in the ring opening polymerization also exhibited high efficiency in the degradation reaction.

N-Heterocyclic Carbene-Based Zinc Complexes: Same Precursors for Different Lactide Ring-Opening Polymerization Mechanisms.

Federica Tufano et al.

Summary: Two zinc complexes with NHC ligands were synthesized and studied for their behavior in the Ring-Opening Polymerization of lactides, showing efficiency as initiators with molecular weights dependent on cocatalysts. Microstructural analysis revealed enriched heterotactic PLA, with kinetic parameters compared between different conditions and reactions showing pseudo-first-order dependence on monomer concentration. Reactivity studies aimed to uncover the active species in polymerization processes with different catalytic systems, including zinc complexes alone or in combination with neutral or ionic cocatalysts.

Zinc 8-aminotrihydroquinolines appended with pendant N-diphenylphosphinoethyl arms as exceptionally active catalysts for the ROP of ε-CL

Furong Cao et al.

Summary: In this study, six zinc(ii) chloride complexes were prepared using five different ligands as a neutral ligand support. These complexes displayed good activity in the ring-opening polymerization of epsilon-caprolactone under certain reaction conditions. The substituents on the ligands also had an effect on the properties of the resulting polymers. The results of this research are important for the design and synthesis of new polymers.

Homoleptic phenoxy-imine pyridine zinc complexes: efficient catalysts for solvent free synthesis and chemical degradation of polyesters

Sara D'Aniello et al.

Summary: The synthesis and structural characterization of zinc complexes supported by monoanionic phenoxy-imine pyridine ligands with different substituents have been studied. These complexes show excellent catalytic activity in the ring-opening polymerization of l-lactide and the depolymerization of polylactide and poly(ethylene terephthalate) by alcoholysis. The results suggest the potential for implementing a circular plastics economy with low environmental impact.

Guanidinate Zn(II) Complexes as Efficient Catalysts for Lactide Homo- and Copolymerization under Industrially Relevant Conditions

Ilaria D'Auria et al.

Summary: Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) is currently the most commercially relevant biodegradable polymer, and the use of zinc(II) catalysts in the ROP of L-lactide under high temperature conditions has shown stability, high yield, and reduced monomer racemization, making it suitable for industrial applications. Additionally, these catalysts can copolymerize L-lactide with e-caprolactone to produce either block or random copolymers.

A Single Catalyst for Promoting Reverse Processes: Synthesis and Chemical Degradation of Polylactide

Federica Santulli et al.

Summary: A simple zinc catalyst has been found to exhibit high activity in both the synthesis and degradation of polylactide, showing one of the highest activities in ring-opening polymerization of lactides even under industrial conditions. The same complex also proved to be efficient in depolymerization of polylactide by alcoholysis at room temperature and without solvent, reducing costs and environmental impact.
