How to best estimate the viscosity of lipid bilayers

Vladimir Adrien et al.

Summary: This article compares the results of determining membrane viscosity using FLIM and FRAP, highlighting the sensitivity of FLIM to local viscosity changes and the limited ability of FRAP to provide viscosity values for the hydrophobic part of the membrane. It also discusses the application and limitations of the hydrodynamic model approach in estimating membrane viscosity based on the mobility of different sized membrane inclusions.

In-line holographic microscopy with model-based analysis

Caroline Martin et al.

Summary: Holographic microscopy is an optical microscope that collects holograms and analyzes them to obtain information about specimen properties. It offers high-speed acquisition of precise results. This Primer introduces in-line holographic microscopy and three analysis methods and discusses applications, reproducibility, and limitations. It also provides an outlook on future development and the integration between experiment and computational analysis.

Membrane Surface Modulates Slow Diffusion in Small Crowded Droplets

Kanae Harusawa et al.

Summary: Membranes are essential structures in cells, and their behaviors under macromolecular crowding and cell-sized confinement are not fully understood. This study investigated the effects of membrane properties on molecular diffusion in intracellular environments modeled by crowding micrometer-sized droplets. The addition of a PEGylated lipid to the PC membrane significantly altered molecular diffusion inside small droplets of concentrated dextran, with a nonmonotonic relationship against dextran concentration.

Hydrodynamic shear dissipation and transmission in lipid bilayers

Guillermo J. Amador et al.

Summary: The study introduced an active microrheology technique to investigate the physical properties of lipid membranes, revealing the significant impact of lipid structure on viscosity and fluid transmission properties. Ordered-phase and liquid disordered-phase lipid bilayers exhibit distinct differences in viscosity and intermonolayer friction.
