From snapshots to manifolds - a tale of shear flows

E. Farzamnik et al.

Summary: We propose a novel nonlinear manifold learning method using Isomap as encoder and K-nearest neighbours algorithm as decoder, and demonstrate its superiority over POD for shedding-dominated shear flows. The method is applied to numerical and experimental datasets including fluidic pinball, swirling jet and wake behind tandem cylinders, and is able to describe the bifurcation, chaotic regime and shedding phases of the flow. The reconstruction error of the manifold model is small, indicating that the low embedding dimensions contain the coherent structure dynamics.

Fast data-driven model reduction for nonlinear dynamical systems

Joar Axas et al.

Summary: In this study, we propose a fast method for nonlinear data-driven model reduction of dynamical systems onto their slowest nonresonant spectral submanifolds (SSMs). We reformulate the tasks as explicit problems under simplifying assumptions and provide a novel method for timelag selection. Experimental results demonstrate that our alternative approach yields accurate and sparse models for essentially nonlinear dynamics on both numerical and experimental datasets.

Transition to Turbulence in Pipe Flow

Marc Avila et al.

Summary: Since Reynolds' seminal studies in the nineteenth century, pipe flow has been a primary prototype for studying the transition to turbulence in wall-bounded flows. Despite its apparent simplicity, researchers have been studying various aspects of this problem for over a century. This review provides insights from three different perspectives: stability and susceptibility of laminar flow, phase transition and spatiotemporal dynamics, and dynamical systems analysis of the Navier-Stokes equations. The review highlights how these perspectives have contributed to a profound understanding of the onset of turbulence in pipe flow, as well as discussing open points, applications to complex fluid flows, and similarities with other wall-bounded flows.

How to compute invariant manifolds and their reduced dynamics in high-dimensional finite element models

Shobhit Jain et al.

Summary: Invariant manifolds are important constructs for understanding nonlinear phenomena in dynamical systems, particularly in mechanical systems. However, their use has been limited to low-dimensional academic examples, and challenges exist in computing them for realistic engineering structures described by finite element models.

Nonlinear analysis of forced mechanical systems with internal resonance using spectral submanifolds, Part II: Bifurcation and quasi-periodic response

Mingwu Li et al.

Summary: In Part I of this paper, the authors constructed reduced-order models for harmonically excited mechanical systems with internal resonances using spectral submanifold theory. By locating the solution branches of equilibria of the corresponding reduced-order model, they were able to extract forced response curves formed by periodic orbits of the full system. In Part II, the authors use bifurcations of the equilibria of the reduced-order model to predict bifurcations of the periodic response of the full system, specifically predicting the existence of two-dimensional and three-dimensional quasi-periodic attractors and repellers in periodically forced mechanical systems of arbitrary dimension.

Data-driven prediction in dynamical systems: recent developments

Amin Ghadami et al.

Summary: In recent years, there has been a significant shift towards more complex and larger-scale systems in applied sciences. The need to understand and predict the dynamics of these systems has led to advancements in data-driven techniques and machine learning approaches. While these methods have made great strides, there is still a need to develop new techniques to improve their applicability to a wider range of complex systems.

Data-driven discovery of intrinsic dynamics

Daniel Floryan et al.

Summary: Dynamical models are crucial for understanding and predicting natural systems, but the choice of state variables is often redundant and obscures the underlying behavior of the system. This study combines manifold theory and neural networks to develop a method that learns a system's intrinsic state variables directly from time-series data, reducing the dimensionality of the data.

Exact Coherent States and the Nonlinear Dynamics of Wall-Bounded Turbulent Flows

Michael D. Graham et al.

Summary: Wall-bounded turbulence exhibits persistent patterns called coherent structures, which are important for transport processes. Recent research has focused on exact coherent states (ECS) in wall-bounded parallel flows, which are non-turbulent, nonlinear solutions resembling coherent structures in turbulence.

Machine-Learning based model order reduction of a biomechanical model of the human tongue

Maxime Calka et al.

Summary: This paper presents a Machine-Learning based Model Order Reduction method applied to a 3D Finite Element biomechanical model to create a Digital Twin Model for real-time simulations. The method allows for real-time prediction of mechanical responses of the human tongue to muscle activations from a limited number of simulations, showing sub-millimetric spatial accuracy. Future evaluations will focus on tongue movements induced by multiple muscle activations, offering promising perspectives for clinical use in predicting the impact of tongue surgery on tongue mobility.
