Assessment of spatiotemporal variability of precipitation using entropy indexes: a case study of Beijing, China

Longgang Du et al.

Summary: This study identified the optimal entropy index SE to assess the complexity of precipitation in Beijing, showing that precipitation complexity can be viewed in terms of four sub-regions. Climate variability and human activities impact precipitation complexity differently in different regions, with varying trends in precipitation complexity.

Construction and application of integrated entropy model for measuring precipitation complexity

Xi Yang

Summary: This study measured the complexity of precipitation using multiple entropy models and proposed an integrated entropy model for analyzing the spatial differences in precipitation complexity in Fujian. The results showed that the integrated entropy model outperformed the single entropy models and revealed regional differences in precipitation complexity, which were influenced by terrain and distance from the sea.

Complexity of Magnetic-field Turbulence at Reconnection Exhausts in the Solar Wind at 1 au

Rodrigo A. Miranda et al.

Summary: Magnetic reconnection is a complex mechanism in space and astrophysical plasmas that converts magnetic energy into particle kinetic energy and plasma thermal energy. Our analysis of magnetic-field turbulence at the exhaust of four reconnection events in the solar wind reveals that higher intermittency is associated with lower entropy and higher complexity in the inertial subrange. The results suggest that coherent structures within reconnection exhausts in magnetic-field turbulence may lead to decreased entropy and increased complexity.

Spatiotemporal variability of multifractal properties of fineresolution daily gridded rainfall fields over India

Adarsh Sankaran et al.

Summary: This study investigated the multifractal characteristics of daily gridded rainfall fields in India from 1901 to 2013, revealing short-term persistency and strong multifractality in the majority of grid points. The highest complexity and persistence were found in mountainous regions of northern and northeastern India, with Kerala showing the largest variability, while Peninsular India exhibited the least reduction in complexity, multifractality, and persistence post-1977.

Information-theoretic characterization of eye-tracking signals with relation to cognitive tasks

F. R. Iaconis et al.

Summary: Eye tracking technology is increasingly used in psychopedagogy and psychology as a powerful diagnostic tool, providing valuable information about subjects' performance. A study found that statistical complexity measures of eye tracking time series can reveal gaze features during problem-solving, while Fisher information reflects task difficulties.

Complexity entropy-analysis of monthly rainfall time series in northeastern Brazil

Antonio Samuel Alves Silva et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the predictability and complexity of monthly rainfall temporal series in Pernambuco state, northeastern Brazil using complexity entropy causality plane and Fisher Shannon plane. By comparing the positions in these planes, different rainfall regimes in inland, intermediate, and coastal regions were distinguished. Time dependent analysis identified periods of higher entropy related to El Nino episodes and historical droughts in the Sertao region.

Changes in long-term properties and natural cycles of the Danube river level and flow induced by damming

Djordje Stratimirovic et al.

Summary: This study assessed the changes in scaling properties of the river Danube level and flow data associated with the construction of hydrological power plants. The results showed different scaling changes in upstream and downstream areas, with artificial reservoir operations leading to the disappearance of annual cycles in the upstream data.

Multiscale Complexity Analysis of Rainfall in Northeast Brazil

Antonio Samuel Alves da Silva et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the complexity of monthly rainfall temporal series recorded at 133 gauge stations in the state of Pernambuco, northeastern Brazil from 1962 to 2012 using the modified multiscale entropy method. The research identified temporal scales that distinguish rainfall regularity in different regions and contributes to the establishment of multiscale methods based on information theory in climatological studies.

Diego M. Mateos et al.

Summary: Sleep plays a significant role in daily cognitive performance, mood, and memory. The study of sleep has attracted a wide range of interest from neuroscientists, clinicians, and the general population. Healthy body function and personal well-being depend on the proper unfolding and continuity of sleep cycles.

Uncertainty analysis for evaluating flow regime alteration of Jinsha River based on Indicators of Hydrologic Alteration

Xingyu Zhou et al.

Summary: The relationship between data length and evaluation of hydrological alteration is uncertain. The study applied the length of record (LOR) method to analyze the impact of different data lengths on Indicators of Hydrologic Alteration (IHA) evaluation in the Jinsha River. Results show that different indicators may require different lengths of data support, and a logarithmic correlation was found between LOR results and the coefficient of variation (CV) of IHA statistics.

Ordinal patterns-based methodologies for distinguishing chaos from noise in discrete time series

Massimiliano Zanin et al.

Summary: This passage discusses the importance of stochasticity vs. chaoticity in time series, and the use of permutation patterns with different metrics to assess their prevalence. The review compares the performance, applicability, and limitations of such approaches in distinguishing chaos from stochasticity in discrete time series.
