Chameleon attractors in turbulent flows

Tommaso Alberti et al.

Summary: Turbulent flows exhibit complex dynamics characterized by non-hyperbolic chaos, randomness, state-dependent persistence, and unpredictability. The concept of universality of turbulent attractors is shown to be invalid as their properties depend on the scale of observation. These changing attractors, which we term chameleon attractors, highlight the dynamic nature of turbulence.

Decomposing the dynamics of the Lorenz 1963 model using unstable periodic orbits: Averages, transitions, and quasi-invariant sets

Chiara Cecilia Maiocchi et al.

Summary: This article investigates the approximation of chaotic trajectories in the Lorenz 1963 model using unstable periodic orbits (UPOs). The study finds that longer period UPOs provide a better local approximation to the trajectory. Additionally, by constructing a Markov chain and analyzing the scattering of the orbit between different UPO neighborhoods, a different interpretation of the mixing processes in the system is provided using the concept of quasi-invariant sets.

Multiscale fractal dimension analysis of a reduced order model of coupled ocean-atmosphere dynamics

Tommaso Alberti et al.

Summary: The study uses multivariate empirical mode decomposition (MEMD) to investigate the multivariate and multiscale properties of ocean-atmosphere coupled dynamics, revealing a rich variety of features and different multifractal properties for the ocean and atmosphere at different timescales. The research demonstrates that for weak ocean-atmosphere coupling, the dimensions of the two model components are very different, while for strong coupling, the scaling properties are more similar especially at longer timescales, indicating the presence of a coherent coupled dynamics. The comparison with reanalysis data shows similar qualitative behavior in terms of multiscale dimensions, highlighting the scale dependency of the statistics of the phase-space density of points for different regions in the coupled atmosphere-ocean system.
