A speech planning network for interactive language use

Gregg A. Castellucci et al.

Summary: During conversation, people take turns speaking and avoid interruption, which requires a remarkable degree of coordination. The latencies between turns, typically about 200 milliseconds, are considerably shorter than those observed in simple word-production tasks, indicating that speakers often plan their responses while listening to their partners. In this study, researchers used intracranial electrocorticography to measure neural activity and identified a planning-related speech network in the brain that is central to natural language generation during social interaction.

A cortical circuit for audio-visual predictions

Aleena R. Garner et al.

Summary: The translation describes the neural mechanism by which auditory input can shape visual representations of behaviorally relevant stimuli in mice through direct interactions between auditory and visual cortices. It also shows that the association of auditory and visual stimuli leads to experience-dependent suppression of visual responses in the primary visual cortex (V1).

Imagined speech can be decoded from low- and cross-frequency intracranial EEG features

Summary: Researchers extracted consistent and specific neural features from patients performing speech production tasks and found that low-frequency power and cross-frequency dynamics play a key role in decoding imagined speech.

Unveiling the abstract format of mnemonic representations

Yuna Kwak et al.

Summary: Working memory stores information for future use, bridging the gap between perception and behavior. This study finds that when a certain memory representation is useful for guiding behavior, different visual stimuli can be flexibly recoded into the same memory format. These mnemonic representations are abstractions of low-level perceptual features.

Imaginative Constraints and Generative Models

Daniel Williams

Summary: This paper discusses how knowledge can be generated when the contents of imagination are voluntarily determined. It focuses on the nature of the constraints that underpin sensory imagination, arguing that they come from the structure of causal probabilistic generative models. The paper also contrasts this view with Peter Langland-Hassan's account of sensory imagination in terms of forward models in sensorimotor control.
