Understanding the ultralow lattice thermal conductivity of monoclinic RETaO4 from acoustic-optical phonon anti-crossing property and a comparison with ZrO2

Mengdi Gan et al.

Summary: Rare-earth tantalates (RETaO4) are promising thermal barrier coating (TBC) materials with low thermal conductivity, but the mechanism behind this property remains unclear. This study compares the thermal transport properties of monoclinic (m)-RETaO4 (RE = Y, Eu, Gd, Dy, Er) with ZrO2 to reveal the mechanism of low lattice thermal conductivity. The results show that strong anharmonicity and large scattering rate in m-RETaO4, derived from strong ionic bonding in the crystal structure and strong anti-crossing property of acoustic-optical phonon branches in phonon dispersion, contribute to its lower thermal conductivity compared to ZrO2. Distortion degree and stretching force constant are suggested as descriptors to screen RETaO4 with relatively lower thermal conductivity.

Rare-earth high-entropy aluminate-toughened-zirconate dual-phase composite ceramics for advanced thermal barrier coatings

Xuewei Luo et al.

Summary: Superb toughening is achieved by incorporating a secondary ferroelastic phase in high-entropy rare-earth zirconate 5RE(2)Zr(2)O(7) (HZ). An enhancement of 64% in fracture toughness is reported through the addition of 30mol% high-entropy rare-earth aluminate 5REAlO(3) (HA) to the HZ matrix (30HA). The present dual-phase composite ceramic 30HA has a large fracture toughness of 2.77 +/- 0.14 MPa m1/2 and excellent high-temperature phase stability.

Effect of CMAS attack behaviour on stress distribution in double-ceramic-layer thermal barrier coatings

Yangguang Liu et al.

Summary: Stress distribution in thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) significantly affects crack nucleation and propagation. The finite element method (FEM) was used to numerically study the stress distribution of double-layer plasma-sprayed coatings under thermal shock experiments coupled with calcium-magnesium-alumina-silicate (CMAS) attack. The results showed that the maximum stress increased with the thickness of CMAS deposition on the coated surface. The relationship between CMAS attack, thermal shock, stress distribution, and cracking initiation in TBC systems was clarified, providing important guidance for optimizing TBCs.

Novel (Sm0.2Lu0.2Yb0.2Y0.2Dy0.2)3TaO7 high-entropy ceramic for thermal barrier coatings

Weiwei Sang et al.

Summary: A novel oxide (Sm0.2Lu0.2Dy0.2Yb0.2Y0.2)3TaO7 (SLT-5RE0.2) with a single-fluorite structure was synthesized and its crystal structure, mechanical and thermophysical properties were investigated. Compared to YSZ, SLT-5RE0.2 exhibits lower Young's modulus, less mean acoustic velocity, and higher Vickers microhardness. It also has low thermal conductivity and high thermal expansion coefficient, making it a potential candidate material for thermal barrier coatings.

High-entropy ferroelastic (10RE 0.1 )TaO 4 ceramics with oxygen vacancies and improved thermophysical properties

Jun Wang et al.

Summary: The primary purpose of this work is to optimize the thermophysical properties of rare-earth tantalate ceramics using the high-entropy effect. A high-entropy rare-earth tantalate ceramic (10RE 0.1 )TaO 4 was successfully synthesized, and the lattice distortion and oxygen vacancy concentration in the rare-earth tantalates were characterized. Compared with single rare-earth tantalates, (10RE 0.1 )TaO 4 exhibits reduced thermal conductivity and lower phonon thermal conductivity in a wide temperature range. It is attributed to scattering effects from ferroelastic domains, lattice distortion, and point defects targeting different frequency phonons. Additionally, (10RE 0.1 )TaO 4 shows improved thermal expansion coefficient, Young's modulus, and high-temperature phase stability compared to single rare-earth tantalates.

Sc-doped Gd2Zr2O7 coating on YSZ thermal barrier coatings to resist CMAS plus molten salt attack

Bowen Li et al.

Summary: In this study, a Sc-doped Gd2Zr2O7 coating is prepared to alleviate the coupling corrosion caused by CMAS and molten salt. The results show that the GZO-Sc coating effectively prevents the attack of CN on YSZ coatings at high temperatures. The reaction between CN and the coating forms a dense reaction layer, and the presence of CaAl2Si2O8 crystals and V-rich layer in the coating improves its corrosion resistance to CN.

Graceful behavior during CMAS corrosion of a high-entropy rare-earth zirconate for thermal barrier coating material

Tian-Zhe Tu et al.

Summary: The study reveals that HEZ ceramics show a graceful behavior to CMAS corrosion, much better than LZ ceramics. HEZ only suffered from dissolution and re-precipitation due to CMAS corrosion, while additional grain boundary corrosion existed in the LZ system. The fine-grained structure of the precipitated high-entropy apatite resulted in a reaction layer without cracks. Therefore, HEZ is a promising candidate for TBCs with extreme resistance to CMAS corrosion.

A functionally graded coating from ZrN to Ti: Experimental characterization, erosion behavior and design concept

Jinwei Yi et al.

Summary: In functionally graded coatings (FGCs), the elemental composition or structure gradually changes as a function of depth, allowing for a gradual transition of properties. A sandwich-like ZrN/Ti FGC, fabricated using the double glow plasma alloying (DGPA) technique, demonstrated high adhesion and erosion resistance due to a transition layer derived from atom diffusion. The coexistence of metal and ceramic phases in the transition layer deflected radial crack propagation and increased plastic work consumption. Thermodynamic calculations showed that controlling the diffusion thickness of Zr over N can improve the phase content of ZrN and reduce the prevalence of unfavorable TiN and Ti2N phases.

Crack-healing behaviour of MoSi2 dispersed Yb2Si2O7 environmental barrier coatings

Mingjian Yuan et al.

Summary: MoSi2 doped Yb2Si2O7 composites were designed to extend the lifetime of Yb2Si2O7 environmental barrier coatings (EBCs) via self-healing cracks during high-temperature applications. The addition of MoSi2 increased the thermal expansion coefficients (CTEs) of the composites and promoted crack healing by filling cracks with SiO2 formed by MoSi2 oxidation. The formation of Yb2Si2O7 with smaller volume expansion was more beneficial for crack healing.

Effect of CeO2 doping on high temperature oxidation resistance of YSZ TBCs

Tian -shun Dong et al.

Summary: This study compares the high temperature oxidation behaviors of YSZ thermal barrier coatings and CeO2-doped YSZ thermal barrier coatings. The results show that CeO2 doping can effectively reduce porosity, resulting in lower oxidation weight gain and TGO growth rates. The CeO2-doped coatings form thinner and less defective TGO layers, delaying the oxidation process and formation of spinel type oxides, therefore improving the high temperature oxidation resistance of YSZ TBCs.
