Fabrication and characterization of bioinspired nanohydroxyapatite scaffolds with different porosities

Angelica M. Castillo-Paz et al.

Summary: This study aimed to fabricate and characterize bovine nanohydroxyapatite (nano-HAp) scaffolds at a low sintering temperature. The results showed that the macro-porosity and pore structure of the scaffolds can be controlled by manipulating the starch content, which is of great significance for the biocompatibility and application prospects of the scaffolds.

Green synthesized hydroxyapatite nanoadsorbent for the adsorptive removal of AB113 dye for environmental applications

Ramesh Vinayagam et al.

Summary: This study successfully synthesized hydroxyapatite (HAp) using the green chemistry approach and the leaf extract of copper pod tree, and investigated its adsorption potential for Acid blue 113 (AB113) dye. The synthesized HAp exhibited rod-shaped morphology with prominent Ca and P elements. It had high crystallinity and thermal stability. The HAp suspension showed good stability with a Zeta potential of -17.7 mV. BET studies confirmed the mesoporous structure and a high specific surface area. The HAp's ability to adsorb AB113 was examined under various process parameters. Batch experiments revealed that optimal dye removal (92.72%) was achieved at pH 8, with a dosage of 1 g/L CP-HAp nps, 20 ppm AB113 concentration, 120 min contact time, 150 rpm agitation speed, and room temperature. The maximum adsorption capacity was determined as 120.48 mg/g. Different isotherms and kinetics were used to describe the adsorption behavior, with the Freundlich isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetics showing good fitting. Thermodynamic investigations indicated that the adsorption process was spontaneous and exothermic. Overall, this study highlights the suitability of HAp nanoadsorbent for the removal of AB113 dye from wastestreams.

Biogenic hydroxyapatite powders: Effects of source and processing methodologies on physicochemical properties and bioactive response

P. A. Forero-Sossa et al.

Summary: This study compared and analyzed the biogenic hydroxyapatite (BHAp) powders obtained from bovine and porcine bones using two methodologies to determine the influence of the obtention process on BHAp properties. The results showed that thermal-treatment significantly influenced the physicochemical properties of BHAp, and changes in carbonate groups content were mainly attributed to the temperature of the thermal-treatment. After immersion in Hank's solution, all samples formed a bone-like apatite layer on the surface, but samples prepared by the B-method also grew a calcite layer due to the release of carbonate ions.

A Study of Thermal Stability of Hydroxyapatite

Natalia V. Bulina et al.

Summary: High-temperature powder sintering is crucial in dense ceramic manufacturing process. The research found that the thermal stability of hydroxyapatite is influenced by the Ca/P ratio, and rapid heating can lead to its congruent melting, forming recrystallized oxyhydroxyapatite.

Noble-metal-free hydroxyapatite activated by facile mechanochemical treatment towards highly-efficient catalytic oxidation of volatile organic compound

Yunzi Xin et al.

Summary: The mechanical chemical treatment of hydroxyapatite (HAp) results in the formation of defect/oxygen vacancies and enhanced basic sites, facilitating efficient catalytic oxidation of VOC for highly-efficient CO2/CO conversion. This opens up a new strategy for the development of novel noble-metal-free catalysts.

Physicochemical properties of 3D bovine natural scaffolds as a function of the anterior-posterior, lateral and superior-inferior directions

Angelica M. Castillo-Paz et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the physicochemical properties of bovine trabecular bone (BTB) and found the presence of various minor ions and preferred orientation of hydroxyapatite nanocrystals in natural scaffolds. Through 3D reconstruction and density calculations, it was discovered that the areal bone mineral density of BTB is inversely related to sample porosity. The mechanical properties of the scaffolds are influenced by the crystalline structure, morphology, and distribution of hydroxyapatite nanocrystals.
