A rational design of FeNi alloy nanoparticles and carbonate-decorated perovskite as a highly active and coke-resistant anode for solid oxide fuel cells

Shuo Zhai et al.

Summary: Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) are an efficient and clean device for converting chemical energy into electricity, but the lack of highly catalytic and carbon-tolerant anodes limits their commercial applications. A new strategy is proposed in this study to remove carbon deposition on the anode surface by in-situ formation of alkali metal carbonate. Developments include a multi-phase composite anode and the synthesis of lithium carbonate on the anode surface to enhance catalytic activity and coke removal efficiency.

Carbon deposition influenced by gas concentration in a Ni/YSZ anode of an internal-reforming solid oxide fuel cell using a detector layer inside the anode

Satoru Sakama et al.

Summary: This study experimentally investigated the influence of electrochemical reactions on carbon deposition in solid oxide fuel cells using methane as fuel. The results showed that electrochemical reactions play an important role in suppressing carbon deposition by providing oxygen ions and increasing water concentration inside the anode. The amount of H2O supplied in fuel and the amount of oxygen ion produced by electrochemical reaction are the determining factors for carbon deposition.

Recent advance in physical description and material development for single component SOFC: A mini-review

Taimoor Raza et al.

Summary: This paper presents a mini review on the recent development of single component solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs), which have the potential to overcome the limitations of high operating temperatures. Unlike conventional three-component SOFCs, single component SOFCs feature a homogeneous layer with hybrid dual ions conduction based on semiconductor-ion hetero-structure materials. The research focuses on the interfacial properties and mechanisms of semiconducting-ionic materials and the transition from non-functional to functional materials with potential for dual ions conduction. The potential of this new device is evaluated and compared to conventional SOFCs, highlighting its promising future prospects.
