Outgassing behavior and heat treatment optimization of JSC-1A lunar regolith simulant

Ryan P. Wilkerson et al.

Summary: In order to establish a long-term presence on the Moon, NASA is focusing on utilizing lunar resources for a range of applications. However, the availability of Apollo regolith for experimentation is limited, so lunar simulants sourced from volcanic minerals and glass are being used. These simulants closely resemble lunar material in terms of mineralogy and chemical composition, but they contain non-lunar phases that behave differently under various processing conditions. Recent experiments on JSC-1A lunar mare simulant have revealed glassy bubbling, which is believed to be caused by the decomposition of non-lunar contaminants. A series of tests were performed to identify the origins of this outgassing and develop heat treatments that can make JSC-1A simulant behave more like lunar material. It was found that water, carbon dioxide, and sulfur dioxide are released at elevated temperatures in both inert gas and vacuum environments, and the presence of hydrogen can significantly change the composition and behavior of the simulant.
