Rational design of a bismuth oxyiodide (Bi/BiO 1- x I) catalyst for synergistic photothermal and photocatalytic inactivation of pathogenic bacteria in water

Huinan Zhao et al.

Summary: In this study, a plasmonic bismuth oxyiodide catalyst was successfully prepared and applied for photothermal and photocatalytic disinfection of pathogenic bacteria in water. The catalyst exhibited excellent performance in inactivating E. coli K-12, with a 7.2 log reduction achieved under optimal conditions. A synergy between photothermal and photocatalytic inactivation was identified, providing insights into the rational design of effective and sustainable water disinfection using bismuth-based photocatalysts.

0D/2D/1D silver-decorated CuPc/Bi2MoO6 Z-scheme heterojunctions enable better visible-light-driven tetracycline photocatalysis

Yisong Xue et al.

Summary: In this study, plasmonic 0D Ag nanoparticles were integrated on the surface of 2D CuPc sensitized 1D Bi2MoO6 nanofibers using an in-situ deposition approach. The resulting Ag-CuPc/Bi2MoO6 nanofibers exhibited enhanced visible-light utilization efficiency, improved charge transfer and separation, and accelerated electron redox transformation in tetracycline photocatalysis. The strong interfacial interaction and Z-scheme heterojunction synergy were identified as the main factors contributing to the superior photocatalytic activity.

Optimizing the electronic structure of BiOBr via constructing oxygen-rich vacancies for highly efficient NIR light-driven antibacterial activity

Jingyu Sun et al.

Summary: In this study, two-dimensional BiOBr nanomaterials with oxygen-rich and oxygen-poor vacancies were designed and their photocatalytic activities were investigated. It was found that the oxygen-rich BiOBr exhibited higher antibacterial activity under NIR light irradiation due to its optimized electronic structure, which resulted in stronger interactions with bacteria, higher absorption capacity to NIR light, and longer photocarrier lifetime. The DFT calculations also showed that the oxygen-rich BiOBr had better O2 adsorption, leading to the generation of more reactive oxygen species for superior activity.

Construction of β-Bi2O3/Bi2O2CO3 heterojunction photocatalyst for deep understanding the importance of separation efficiency and valence band position

Jie-hao Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the photocatalytic performance of f3-Bi203/Bi2O2CO3 composites, finding that the heterojunctions exhibited higher degradation efficiency and better separation efficiency under visible light irradiation. However, lower performance was observed under simulated sunlight, mainly due to the up-shift of the valence band position of Bi2O2CO3, leading to a decrease in oxidative ability of photo-induced holes.

Hierarchical construction of a new Z-scheme Bi/BiVO4-CdS heterojunction for enhanced visible-light photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride

Yongtao Xue et al.

Summary: A cost-effective photocatalyst, Bi/BiVO4-CdS, with efficient electron-hole separation efficiency and excellent light absorption capacity, has been successfully developed for the degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) from wastewater. This photocatalyst exhibits superior performance in TCH degradation, with a degradation ratio of 85.5% within 30 minutes and enhanced stability over multiple cycles, attributed to the generation of h(+), center dot O-2(-), and center dot OH reactive species. Intermediates identified by HPLC-MS suggest proposed pathways for the photocatalytic degradation of TCH using Bi/BiVO4-CdS.

Oxygen vacancies and interfacial electric field co-induced photocatalytic performance of OVs-BiOI/α-Bi2O3 heterojunctions

Jiufu Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, OVs-BiOI/alpha-Bi2O3 p-n heterojunctions with excellent photocatalytic performance were successfully constructed by a solid-liquid reaction. Results show that the interfacial electric field can purposefully guide the photoexcited carriers for efficient separation. The synergistic effect between OVs and the interfacial electric field plays a crucial role in enhancing the photocatalytic performance.

Effect of different pH values on growth solutions for the ZnO nanostructures

Ahmed F. Abdulrahman et al.

Summary: The study showed that adjusting the pH values from acidic to alkaline using ammonia solution induced a significant change in the morphology of ZnO nanostructures. Increasing pH values affected the preferred orientation plane (002) and average transmittance spectrum, resulting in a shift of the absorption band edge to a lower energy region due to the quantum size effect.
