Gypsum Precipitation under Saline Conditions: Thermodynamics, Kinetics, Morphology, and Size Distribution

Amit G. Reiss et al.

Summary: Gypsum is a common sulfate mineral found on Earth and Mars, forming primarily from brines. Understanding gypsum formation contributes to natural processes and industrial practices. Factors like ionic strength, brine composition, and temperature play crucial roles in the precipitation of gypsum crystals.

Changes in traditional building materials: the case of gypsum in Northern Spain

Pedro Bel-Anzue et al.

Summary: The research combines bibliographic review, local visits/interviews, and experimental gypsum calcinations to document traditional processing methods and analyze factors leading to the decline of exterior and structural gypsum use. The obtained results are applicable to other European countries and aid in a better understanding of the technical characteristics of traditional gypsum.

Traditional gypsum renders in the Paris area: focus on a particular typology

Jean Ducasse-Lapeyrusse et al.

Summary: The study characterized Parisian traditional gypsum renders, finding that they mainly consist of gypsum without lime or aggregates added in the fabrication process. Variations in calcite, quartz, and gypsum content were observed between different buildings.

Restoration of ancient gypsum-based plasters: Design of compatible materials

Maria Teresa Freire et al.

Summary: This paper presents the design and evaluation process of compatible materials to replace damaged interior walls and ceilings coatings made of gypsum-based plasters. Based on quantitative requirements and previous works with historic buildings, it was concluded that three different restoration materials need to be developed. The physical and mechanical properties of different gypsum and lime mixes were determined, showing the gypsum-lime binder proportions to be the most influential factor in material properties.
