Stability of hydrotalcite (Mg-Al layered double hydroxide) in presence of different anions

Ellina Bernard et al.

Summary: Experimental observation showed that MgO in cementitious materials precipitates as poorly crystalline hydrotalcite, but the lack of consistent thermodynamic data for hydrotalcite makes geochemical modelling challenging. Synthesizing hydrotalcites with different anions indicated varying levels of crystallinity. The stability of hydrotalcite structure with temperature was found to depend on the incorporated anion.

Effect of carbonates on the formation of magnesium silicate hydrates

Ellina Bernard et al.

Summary: The effect of carbonates on the formation of magnesium silicate hydrate phases was investigated, and it was found that carbonates can significantly accelerate the formation of M-S-H phases.

Influence of sodium nitrate on the phases formed in the MgO-Al2O3-SiO2-H2O system

Ellina Bernard et al.

Summary: The presence of sodium nitrate in the reactions led to the formation of hydrotalcite-like phases and possibly hydrated alumino-silicate gel containing sodium. These minor phases limited the aluminum uptake by magnesium silicate hydrate at higher aluminum contents.

Hydration and microstructural characteristics of MgO in the presence of metakaolin and silica fume

Vineet Shah et al.

Summary: This paper presents the characteristics of hydration products and microstructural development of reactive MgO in the presence of metakaolin (MK) and silica fume (SF), including thermodynamic modeling. It was found that the hydration of MgO-MK mixes led to the formation of hydrotalcite-like phase, brucite, and M-S-H, resulting in a low porosity microstructure and higher compressive strength compared to MgO-SF mixes. The bound water content of hydration products showed a reasonable relationship with compressive strength for both SF and MK mixes.

Evidence of formation of an amorphous magnesium silicate (AMS) phase during alkali activation of (Na-Mg) aluminosilicate glasses

Harisankar Sreenivasan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the reaction products in alkali activated materials (AAMs) synthesized from (Na-Mg) aluminosilicate glasses, revealing the existence of an amorphous magnesium silicate (AMS) phase instead of magnesium silicate hydrate (M-S-H) in Mg-containing AAMs. The formation of AMS is driven by the high charge density of the Mg cation, while the absence of hydrotalcite-group phases is attributed to aluminum depletion caused by zeolite formation.

Use of kaolinite clays in development of a low carbon MgO-clay binder system

Vineet Shah et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that magnesium oxide based cements can serve as a promising alternative to Portland cement, and can be produced using calcined kaolinitic clay. The MgO binder shows comparable or better compressive strength and significantly lower porosity compared to systems containing silica fume. The presence of magnesium carbonate further enhances the physical properties of the clay mixes.

Pore structure characteristics of MgO-SiO2 binder

Vineet Shah et al.

Summary: This study investigated the pore structure characteristics of MgO-SiO2 binders and found that MgO-MK mixes exhibited a finer and denser microstructure compared to MgO-SF mixes. The space-filling capacity of hydration products of MgO-MK binder was found to be better than PC control mix. Overall, the pore structure and hydration properties of MgO-SiO2 binders were significantly influenced by the type of silica source and the MgO/SiO2 ratio.
